Job Details

Job FieldThe Interdisciplinary Centre for Health and Society (ICHS) at the University of Toronto Scarborough invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Environmental Health. The appointment will be held jointly with ICHS (49%) and with the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences or the Department of Psychology depending on the area of expertise of the successful candidate (51%). The appointment will commence on July 1, 2020 or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Environmental Science, Epidemiology, Population and Public Health, or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in interdisciplinary research and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and expand our existing ICHS strengths, with a preference in health across life course or Indigenous health. Preference also for candidates with training in lab and/or clinical health sciences, expertise in quantitative methods, and/or experience as a postdoctoral scholar.

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent interdisciplinary research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

The successful candidate may teach an introductory undergraduate course in pathophysiology as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise. Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and the demonstrated ability to contribute to an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree program as demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations, or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities documented in the submitted teaching materials, as well as strong letters of reference. Other teaching-related activities may include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or conference posters or presentations.

Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials. Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. We seek candidates who value diversity and whose research, teaching and service bear out our commitment to equity. Candidates are therefore also asked to submit a 1‐2 page statement of contributions to equity and diversity, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to) research or teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities, the development of inclusive pedagogies, or the mentoring of students from underrepresented groups.

The appointment is at University of Toronto Scarborough, which is a research-intensive campus with an interdisciplinary commitment, a multicultural student body, and a modern campus.
