Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Advisement and Recruitment, the Academic Advisor & Recruitment Specialist serves as an advisement and recruitment liaison to the surrounding community colleges, local business and industry, and community.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

1. Serves as a liaison for Southern Miss by establishing a regular presence on assigned community college campuses. Regularly staffs office hours, builds collaborative relationships with community college faculty and staff, and is a key advocate for transfer students as they transition to the University.

2. Provides early advisement to students enrolled at the community college with the intention of attending Southern Miss. This advisement is aimed at reducing the accumulation of unnecessary coursework and assisting students in course selection that best prepare the student to complete a bachelor’s degree.

3. Works closely with admissions, financial aid, and the registrar to ensure policies are followed. Serves as a contact for all prospective and new students explaining all admission and degree program requirements. Assists new students in navigating the admission, financial aid, and registration processes. Confers with academic units regarding academic records, credits, policy and program requirements. Assists advisors throughout the year on retention efforts.

4. Regularly attends recruitment events at the community college, within local places of employment and in the community as a representative for Southern Miss. Responsible for coordinating, setting up, and attending assigned recruitment events.

5. Corresponds with all prospective students, faculty, and staff with a high degree of professionalism. Employs excellent written and verbal communication skills. Able to work with the University’s data management systems.

6. Supports a wide variety of academic programming both on and off campus, including orientation, registration, and on-campus recruitment events at Southern Miss. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree

  • Knowledge of university degree programs and requirements.
  • Adept in office systems and technology.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Resourceful and determined to provide a positive experience for others.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Preferred Qualifications Related experience in a college or university environment.
