Miami University

Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School

Oxford, OH

Miami University seeks an innovative, collaborative leader and scholar to serve as its Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School. Reporting to the Provost, this individual will lead reprioritized efforts, as outlined in Miami’s new strategic plan, to strengthen the role of graduate education at Miami University. This is an exciting opportunity for a thought leader to cultivate relationships across departments and help mold an updated brand for the Graduate School. The position has been recently separated from the role that oversees the university’s research enterprise, giving the new Dean the chance to focus solely on the excellence of Miami’s graduate education.

The Graduate School offers 66 master’s, 13 doctoral, 1 specialist, and 19 certificate programs spanning a wide range of disciplines. The Dean will lead efforts to gauge the viability of program offerings and assess the allocation of graduate-level resources. Working in partnership with faculty, staff, graduate students, and the new Vice President for Research and Innovation, the Dean will be a resource for scholarly activity, program design, and professional development. The Dean will also lead discussions around growth opportunities for new and existing programs.

The Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School will work collaboratively with other university leaders to help drive the overall mission and vision for Miami. This person will connect with key stakeholders to create a culture that drives creativity, scholarship, and inclusivity. The Dean will have the opportunity to foster a graduate school brand on a campus widely known for its undergraduate prowess. Additionally, this person will work to develop and showcase innovative programs – with a focus on +1 or +2 masters degrees serving our exceptionally strong undergraduates as well as mid-career professionals, leveraging our various campuses and locations, online and hybrid offerings, and initiatives for continuing professional development for nontraditional and off-campus learners – all designed to attract a diverse student body.

Miami University seeks an Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School who will be a cooperative visionary able to lead the on-going growth of a strong, dynamic Graduate School. This individual must be a creative thinker who can drive the change necessary to take Miami’s graduate programs to the next level, with a specific focus on ensuring that they are right-sized, well-resourced, strategically aligned, and deeply integrated into the university at all levels. The Dean will be the champion of students, faculty, and staff who are involved in graduate education; this person will continue to build an inclusive environment for teaching, learning, and research.

The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate or its equivalent, a strong personal record of leading graduate-level programs, thorough knowledge of the operations and practices of a comprehensive research-oriented university, proven administrative success, and achievements in academia that merit appointment as a tenured full professor in a discipline represented at Miami University. This individual will display the emotional intelligence and interpersonal abilities necessary to lead and inspire diverse constituents while working across and throughout the university and the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Organization

Nationally recognized as one of the country's most outstanding undergraduate institutions, Miami University is a public university located in Oxford, Ohio (35 miles north of Cincinnati), with regional locations in Hamilton, Middletown, and West Chester, Ohio, and the John E. Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg. Miami combines a wide range of strong academic programs with the personal attention ordinarily found only at much smaller institutions. A liberal education core complements the more specialized studies of the majors.

Along with an impressive number of opportunities to gain practical, hands-on and immersive experiences, Miami is distinguished by a faculty who enjoy teaching and mentoring students. Recognized as a "Public Ivy" by Richard Moll in his 1985 book about America's flagship universities, Miami is consistently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s best schools for “unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.” This commitment to teaching is demonstrated in the University's record of exceptional retention and graduation rates-which are among highest for NCAA Division I schools. Miami also regularly ranks among the top public doctoral university in the country for study abroad participation by undergraduate students.

Chartered in 1809, Miami is the 10th oldest public university in the nation. Enrollment includes almost 15,000 undergraduates and more than 2,200 graduate students on the Oxford campus, which is lauded for its exceptional beauty. The charming, historic uptown area of Oxford is adjacent to the campus.

Miami offers bachelor degrees in over 100 areas of study and master's degrees in more than 50 areas; the University also offers a number of doctoral degrees.
