Entry-level professional nurse focused primarily on developing knowledge and skills. Provides safe patient care at a basic level and shows growth in ability to care for increasingly complex patients. Manages care and implements treatment plans at a basic skill level in collaboration with patients their families physicians and other members of the health care team. Requires consultation with more experienced clinicians and benefits from feedback.

This job description integrates the ANA 2015 Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, Third Edition  and the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (ANA, 2015), and the UVA Nursing Professional Practice Model.

ANA Scope and Standards of Practice definition of nursing:

Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities and populations.


  • Assesses the physical psychological social and cultural dimensions of patients according to professional practice standards and institutional policy/procedure at the Clinician 1 level.
  • Organizes prioritizes and coordinates nursing care activities considering the needs of the patient at the Clinician 1 level.
  • Implements patient population specific interventions based on individual patient needs at the Clinician 1 level.
  • effectiveness of care and care coordination progressing patients toward desired outcomes at the Clinician 1 level.
  • Develops and implements patient/caregiver teaching plan based on identified health education needs and the condition and age of the patient at the Clinician 1 level.
  • Provides for a safe environment and safe delivery of care.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional development of self and contributes to and assists with the professional development of others at the Clinician 1 level. 
  • Demonstrates leadership in the delivery of patient care at the Clinician 1 level. 
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Position Compensation Range: -


  • Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing required within 5 years of hire.

  • Experience: No experience required.

  • Licensure: Licensed to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or graduate who has filed a completed application for licensure in Virginia and has received an authorization letter issued by the board may practice nursing in Virginia from the date of the authorization letter. The period of practice shall not exceed 90 days between the date of successful completion of the nursing education program, as documented on the applicant's transcript, and the publication of the results of the candidate's first licensing examination. Per Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) directive dated March 19, 2020 and in accordance with Governor of Virginia Executive Order number 51 (2020), the 90-day time limit is waived so that a Registered Nurse applicant may practice until they are able to take the NCLEX but no later than 90 days following the expiration of the Executive Order. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.


Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently walking and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

Interviews for the Summer 2020 Nurse Residency Program began in late January and will continue until all positions are filled. If you are selected for an interview you will be contacted by a Human Resource representative. For priority consideration for Pediatrics, Emergency Department and the ICU applications must be received by December 31, 2019.

If you are hired into a Clinician I position, you will be automatically enrolled in our Nurse Residency Program which consists of 12 classes meeting once a month during the first year of employment. Upon successful completion of the Nurse Residency Program, UVA Clinician I RNs earn 3 academic credits through UVA's School of Continuing & Professional Studies.

Start dates for the Summer 2020 NRP range from late July through late October and depends on RN licensure.
