General Description
Under the direction of the Food Service Manager, prepare short-order breakfast and other grill food items.This position is a 10 month part-time, M-F 7:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Initial placement is at
$14.32 per hour

Job Duties
Job duties of the Grill Fry Cook include:
  • Grill and fry breakfast foods; prepare breakfast foods to order and in advance of meal service time.
  • Prepare and cook short-order snack bar food items.
  • Clean and maintain grill and other assigned equipment according to established health and sanitation standards; report needed equipment repairs to supervisor.
  • Assist in regular inventory of supplies; maintain record of quantity of food grilled and spoilage record as directed.
  • Maintain an adequate supply of foods available for sale.
  • Prepare foods for special events and catered functions as directed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.



Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):

Any combination equivalent to:
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed below including two years' experience in institutional food service.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Food Handler Certificate ( or must be completed within 30 days of employment)
  • Food Manager Certificate
Working Conditions:
Environment
  • Cafeteria and kitchen environment; subject to heat from ovens and grills.
  • Constant interruptions.
Physical Abilities
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard kitchen equipment
  • Ability to hear and speak to communicate with students/employees/public.
  • Ability to see to read recipes and measuring devices.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended period of time.
  • Ability to reach in all directions and bend at the waist.
  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects.
Hazards
  • Working around and with equipment having moving parts and sharp blades.
  • Extreme heat from grill.


Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and methods of quantity food preparation.
  • Sanitation and safety procedures associated with preparing and cooking foods in large quantities.
  • Common food service equipment used in grill and fry cooking.
  • Food preparation techniques to enhance visual attractiveness of food items.
  • Food storage techniques.
  • Methods of computing food quantities and altering recipes.
Ability to:
  • Read hand-written notes, menus, recipes, cookbooks and magazines.
  • Utilize English measuring system.
  • Adjust food quantities and alter recipes.
  • Organize time effectively.
  • Utilize kitchen machinery, equipment and utensils effectively and safely.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Lift items in a safe manner.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Organization

College of the Sequoias is a two-year California community college offering educational and enrichment programs for the residents of its district in Tulare and Kings counties. The college was established in 1925 and moved to its current 62-acre main campus site in Visalia in 1940.

In addition to the campus in Visalia, COS operates a full-service center in Hanford that is also home to the college's police and fire academies.

COS also opened its Tulare College Center in January 2013. It is a full-service college center and the home of COS' agriculture program
