Position Summary

The Department of Horticulture (www.hort.uga.edu), The University of Georgia, is seeking applicants for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Horticulture with responsibilities in vegetable breeding. The position is a nine-month academic-year tenure track position with a 70% Research and 30% Extension appointment, with a guarantee of two months of summer salary. The incumbent will be expected to establish a research and extension program that will use traditional and modern plant breeding techniques to address high priority problems/issues in vegetable breeding in the Southeast United States; provide training, resource materials and technical assistance to county extension agents; procure extramural funding; publish research findings; and regularly participate in other scholarly and departmental activities including participation in and support of graduate education. The candidate will be expected to have national recognition for their efforts and interact effectively with growers, industry leaders, government agencies, grower organizations, as well as other disciplines, and develop regional cooperation when feasible. Frequent automobile travel to a variety of sites, including many rural locations, is expected of this position. The incumbent will collaborate and work cooperatively with other scientists, county faculty, and industry clientele as well as have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

The position will be located at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus in Tifton, Georgia.

Additional Requirements

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Horticulture or related field.

To be considered for the rank of Associate Professor, candidates should demonstrate clear and convincing evidence of emerging stature as a regional or national authority as appropriate for the position.

Assessment of rank on hire for appointees will be consistent with the requirements for ranks beginning on page 21 of the UGA Guidelines for Appointment, Promotion, & Tenure (https://provost.uga.edu/resources/documents/UGA_Guidelines_for_APT_4_2017_online.pdf) and the tenure processes of the appointing department UGA P&T Criteria by Unit (https://provost.uga.edu/_resources/documents/Horticulture2015.pdf).

To be eligible for tenure on appointment, candidates must be appointed as an Associate Professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Any request for tenure upon appointment be approved before hire.
