01-Nov-2019 Close All Job SummaryThe Department of Biochemistry seeks applications for a full-time Scientist to provide support for the Central Analytical Laboratory-Mass Spectrometry Facility.
The main task of the position is to provide services for biomolecule and small molecule analysis by mass spectrometry, for faculty investigators and student researchers. Expert knowledge of mass spectrometry instrument operation, sample preparation, mass spectral analysis, gas phase chemistry, and organic chemistry is required, including peptide, nucleic acid and small molecule LC, LC/MS and small molecule GC/MS analysis.
The position will also provide training for students in instrument use, support of students and faculty for experiment and project design, maintenance and repair for facility instruments and infrastructure, and facility revenue accounting.
Who We AreThe Department of Biochemistry at the University of Colorado Boulder is world-renowned for research and training in molecular biosciences and biomedicine. This Department operates the University of Colorado Central Analytical Laboratory/Mass Spectrometry Core Facility, which accepts samples from research labs throughout the University of Colorado system, as well as private companies and other academic institutions.What Your Key Responsibilities Will BeSample handling, data collection, and data analysis
  • Collect mass spectrometry data on biomolecule and small molecule service samples.
  • Identify compound structures from high mass accuracy MS and MS/MS spectra, using LC/MS and GC/MS.
User training
  • Train and advise students and faculty in hands-on machine operation and data analysis.
  • Provide expert knowledge of sample handling, data collection and data analysis towards experiment and project design.
Facility maintenance
  • Routine instrument maintenance.
  • Schedule and handle repairs.
  • Facility accounting for revenue and expenditures.
  • Interact and collaborate with other facility scientists.

  • Bachelor's degree in science from an accredited institution AND 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Relevant experience includes a combination of:
    • Scientific training in mass spectrometry and analytical chemistry.
    • Experience in biomolecule and small molecule sample preparation.
    • Understanding of mass spectrometry principles and gas phase chemical reactions.
    • Good communication and teaching skills.
