Departmental Overview

Formally established in July 2019, the Division of Data Science and Information is a dynamic, innovative unit created to meet the opportunities and demands of a world where data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence inform policy and practice in virtually every arena. The Division brings together faculty, researchers, and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science. Core to our work is understanding how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity and responding to these challenges. The Division connects the Data Science Education Program, School of Information, and Departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and Statistics. It also includes the Berkeley Institute for Data Science and Data Science Commons.


The Division seeks a motivated, collaborative, and creative communications professional to help tell our story and extend our reach to a diverse set of audiences. Reporting to the Communications Director, the Communications Manager will create and curate content that aligns with the Division's communication strategies and targets key audiences, including prospective and current undergraduate and graduate students, donors, alumni, faculty, and external partners.



Responsibilities

45% Update and maintain all areas of Division's website, including generating new content and posting announcements and events. Keep site fresh and continually updated. In the future, manage website redesign.




20% D


evelop and execute social media strategy to increase engagement and amplify messages. Identify and use social media management tools and track social media performance metrics to enhance and inform social media strategies.

Compose and distribute broadcast emails, press releases, and other digital communications.

Develop, design, and distribute monthly e-newsletter (s).


5% Manage development of publicity for events.

Monitor media coverage, maintain and update media contact list and mailing lists.

Perform other duties as assigned.





Required Qualifications

This is a one-year, contract position

    Knowledge and understanding of web-based systems and applications; recent experience with website content development and maintenance.

    Advanced knowledge of social media platforms and content scheduling tools. Proven track record of innovation with digital outreach.

    Strong attention to detail.

    Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience writing for publication, web, and social media.

    Experience with and/or knowledge of how to explain complex topics to a general audience.

    Demonstrated success developing communication products that translate organization messaging into compelling, strategically aligned content.

    Minimum 3-5 years of experience in public relations, communications, writing/editing, or related field.

    Excellent interpersonal skills with a service-oriented attitude.

    Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

    Flexibility and strong organizational skills to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Passion for Data Science and its applications in research and social impact

  • Knowledge of campus protocols and channels for communication internally and externally

  • Bachelor's degree in communications or related area and/or equivalent experience/training

  • The hourly salary range designated for this position: $26.53 - $35.91; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
  • This is a one-year contract position. Contract positions may be extended based on operational demand. Contract positions are eligible to participate in the health and welfare programs offered by UC Berkeley.
