WESTMINSTER COLLEGE OF THE ARTS OF RIDER UNIVERSITY, through its School of Fine and Performing Arts (SFPA), announces an opening for a full-time, tenure track appointment in Popular Music Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning September 1, 2020 on the University’s Lawrenceville campus.

The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree (PhD or DMA) in music or in a related field with a focus on popular music studies.  The successful candidate will demonstrate experience with both the conceptual and historical nature of popular music alongside practical skills in popular music theory, composition and arranging.  Direct experience with some of the many styles found in popular music (e.g., pop, hip-hop, jazz, EDM, blues, reggae) is expected.   

ABD candidates who will complete their degree within one year of appointment will be considered. We are looking for promising scholar-practitioners with demonstrated teaching experience whose primary field is popular music and whose secondary area of interest complements the department. We especially encourage applications from candidates whose backgrounds are underrepresented in academia broadly and in music specifically.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

•             designing and delivering a sequence of courses geared toward Popular Music Studies majors focusing on pop theory, songwriting, and arranging; these courses will incorporate instruction on a digital audio workstation such as Logic Pro, Ableton Live, and/or ProTools

•             teaching in some other areas of the major, preferably pop instrument/voice lessons, pop performance ensembles, and/or studio engineering.

•             recruiting a diverse cohort of students through official University events as well as through communication with prospective students throughout the recruiting season

•             participating in departmental activities including representing the department on committees and working groups on campus

•             engaging in ongoing scholarly or creative work, which can include traditional academic publications, a portfolio of creative work, or a combination of both

•             advising and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds

Desired qualifications include:

•             Experience in the popular music industry as a scholar and/or practitioner

•             Significant experience with the broad spectrum of popular music

•             Performance experience in some genre of popular music

•             Familiarity with current research on race, class, and gender studies as these relate to popular music study and practice

•             Experience coaching students in popular music performance ensembles
