Job Summary: The Alabama Transportation Institute (ATI) invites applications for several research positions such as Assistant Research Economist, Assistant Research Engineer, Assistant Research Planner, Assistant Research Scientist, Associate Research Economist, Associate Research Planner, Associate Research Engineer, Associate Research Scientist, Research Economist, Research Planner, Research Engineer, Research Scientist, Senior Research Economist, Senior Research Planner, Senior Research Engineer, or Senior Research Scientist. Potential roles include those as Assistant Director or Program Manager.

Primary focus will be to work with ATI’s Executive Director and others to support the Institute’s mission. The individuals appointed to these positions will be expected to conduct, evaluate, disseminate and communicate research findings to diverse audiences, develop and submit successful proposals for external funding to support ATI’s programs and initiatives. Research efforts and their outcomes are to be disseminated via publication in professional and academic journals, conference presentations, other media outlets, and presented to policymakers and to stakeholders and the general public. Positions are non-tenure earning staff positions.

Additional Department Summary: Roles and responsibilities: The postdoctoral scholar will be expected to:

1. Conduct research (lead and / or support – independently and on teams) on various topics across transportation systems’ life cycles; topics include safety, risk analysis, economics, environment, finance, human factors, etc.; system life cycle includes policy, planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance and management

2. Significantly contribute on multiple concurrent projects through research design, data collection, data analysis, modeling, simulation, visualization, and dissemination efforts

3. Collaborate with faculty, researchers, staff, and students from varied academic and research units across the University, and those from external organizations, to

a. Develop and submit applications / proposals and secure external funding

b. Successfully complete research projects

c. Effectively disseminate efforts and findings from research and outreach initiatives such as: develop and publish scholarly manuscripts in appropriate peer-reviewed journal publications; as well as in topical conferences, symposia, workshops, and trade publications; and also through print and digital media such as websites, and social-media outlet including short technical briefs and summary documents

4. Manage project activities and staff including doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate students

5. Develop, organize, and participate in meetings, discussion sessions, workshops, seminars

6. Successfully work on and complete in a timely manner other professional duties as assigned

Initial appointments are for one year, with renewal contingent upon demonstration of research productivity.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

1. Earned PhD (or equivalent terminal degree), or a Master’s degree

2. Demonstrated abilities to apply qualitative and/or quantitative, analytical and methodological approaches

3. Demonstrated ability to participate in multi-faceted, interdisciplinary research and implementation programs

4. Working knowledge of emerging issues across modes and areas of transportation, including finance, freight, mobility, safety, technology, and transportation data

5. Very good oral and written communication skills with strong interpersonal and presentation skills

6. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously and meet schedules, deadlines, and constraints

7. Ability to build and leverage relationships with internal and external customers and stakeholders. Ability to adapt to changing environment and adept at problem-solving.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Membership and active participation role(s) in professional organizations or societies at the local, regional or national level

2. Professional licensure or certification in a transportation related field such as Engineering, Law, Planning, GIS, Statistics, etc. This is a non-tenure-earning staff position. Salary is competitive; it will depend on qualifications and experience.
