The Regional Academic Outreach Counselor is a part-time position responsible for representing Angelo State University at community colleges in the West Texas area including Midland College, Odessa College, Howard College-Big Spring, and Cisco Junior College- Abilene. This position has primary responsibility for developing relationships with prospective students and community college faculty and staff in an effort to create pathways for STEM students and students interested in attending ASU. The outreach counselor will travel extensively to community colleges in the West Texas area to represent ASU at transfer fairs, classroom visits, and meetings with advisors in development and maintenance of transfer pathways. The outreach counselor will continue to communicate with interested students to ensure a smooth transition from the community college to ASU. Outside of travel time and visits on the college campuses, office hours will be held at the employee’s home office.

The position is a part-time, benefits-eligible position working 20 hours per week. Typical working hours are during Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; however some weekend and evening hours may be necessary. Working hours are flexible and determined in consultation with the supervisor. The position will require less travel to the community colleges during the summer. Summer job duties shift to focus more on following up with prospective students, coordinating pre-advising, editing transfer guides, and planning for fall events.

Typical Duties/Job Duties

1.Conduct academic focused outreach visits to Midland College, Odessa College, Howard College-Big Spring, and Cisco Junior College- Abilene. Outreach visits include providing degree-seeking informational sessions with academic departments and students and coordinating pre-advising sessions.

2. Develop relationships with community college faculty and staff to improve transfer processes and pre-transfer advising systems.

3. Develop transfer guides and administrative documents with Midland College, Odessa College, Howard College-Big Spring, and Cisco Junior College- Abilene in STEM fields and other areas with high interest.

4. Maintain communication and tracking of interested students including scholarship opportunities, ASU summer link and bridge participation, and application status.

5. Work with Office of Admissions administrators to improve transfer practices and remove barriers for transfer students.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to operate independently, exercising independent judgment and discretion with little or no guidance, and to be able to make decisions on behalf of the Office of Admissions and the university that are appropriate, timely, and defensible.
2. Skilled in organization of multiple duties and deadlines.
3. Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team with a variety of people including student, faculty, and administrators.
4. Ability to speak publicly with small and large groups.
5. Knowledge of Banner and related business processes associated with transfer students.
6. Knowledge of systems used to receive electronic transcripts, Transfer Evaluation System (TES), degree auditing system and other technical systems used to support transfer students.
7. Skilled in written and oral communication.
8. Ability to drive in the West Texas area on a daily basis to visit community college campuses.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: A Bachelors degree required

Other: Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with community college or transfer students.

    Location

    San Angelo is at the center of a thriving community of 100,000 people in west central Texas. Situated on the banks of the Concho, San Angelo today is an artists' haven that supports public art common and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. The city boasts a symphony orchestra whose annual Independence Day Concert, celebrated a day early on July 3, attracts as many as 35,000 visitors to the outdoor stage downtown on the Concho River.

    The city has commuter air service from American Airlines and is within comfortable driving distance of Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and Lubbock.     History

    The institution was founded in 1928 as a community college. By an act of the 58th Session of the Texas Legislature, the institution was designated as Angelo State College in 1965, the year it became a four-year, state-supported institution. The name was changed to Angelo State University in 1969. On Sept. 1, 2007, Angelo State University became a member of the Texas Tech University System.

    ASU has a proud history of diversity, accepting Hispanics, who today make up more than 25 percent of the student population, from the very beginning. The institution enrolled African-Americans prior to Brown vs. Board of Education and one student broke the color barrier in Texas Intercollegiate football in 1953.

    Academics

    Angelo State offers courses through six colleges: Arts and Humanities; Business; Education; Health and Human Services; Science & Engineering; and Graduate Studies. The university is recognized for its strong undergraduate programs overall. For example, ASU's Physics Department has been recognized as one of the top undergraduate programs in the country. The university supports a young and vibrant Honors Program and continues a long tradition, begun in 1948, of encouraging international studies.

    The university is also known for incorporating research into many undergraduate offerings. One recent bachelor's degree recipient, for instance, received the McClung Award for the Best Paper published in the BIOS, the official publication of Beta Beta Beta Biology Honor Society.     Campus

    Angelo State University's campus is situated on 268 acres in the center of San Angelo. The campus is lined with native live oak and pecan trees as well as imported palm trees. In addition to being one of the prettiest campuses in the region, it is one of the safest in Texas. The campus has ultramodern facilities with state-of-the-art technology support. ASU is home to the State of Texas Data Center, one of the state's two such facilities, which provide sophisticated computer processing and disaster recovery services for agencies and universities. Additionally, the university operates a 6,000-acre farm with a Management, Instruction and Research Center that includes a state-of-the-art meat laboratory.
