Professor or Associate Professor in Civil Engineering

The School of Engineering and Technology (SET) at the University of Washington Tacoma (UW Tacoma) is seeking a foundational leader in civil engineering education and research to take on a leadership role in designing, building, and implementing a newly approved Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. SET is a vibrant and rapidly growing school that is guided by the campus core values of excellence, community, diversity and innovation in the South Puget Sound region. A newly approved mechanical engineering program is also being designed and implemented simultaneously.

Applications are sought for a tenured Professor or Associate Professor position. Candidates at the Professor rank are preferred, but applicants who are currently Associate Professors with leadership experience in curriculum and research program development will also be considered. The successful candidate will be the founding faculty member in Civil Engineering at UW Tacoma and is expected to lead and build the program on a multi-year growth plan. This is a 9-month full-time position with an expected start date of September 2020. In the first academic year (September 2020 – June 2021), the successful candidate is expected to focus on curriculum and program design with limited teaching responsibilities.

SET is particularly interested in candidates with demonstrated experience in curriculum and research development, a strong commitment to mentoring junior faculty, serving under-represented populations, and enhancing the diversity of STEM education. Candidates with expertise in construction, transportation, structural engineering, water resources and environmental engineering are preferred, though qualified applicants in all areas of civil engineering will be considered.

The University of Washington (UW) Tacoma, one of three UW campuses, is an urban undergraduate and graduate level campus that is evolving economically, culturally, and architecturally together with the region it serves (South Puget Sound region). The School of Engineering and Technology (SET), formerly known as the Institute of Technology, was created in 2001 through a public/private partnership to address the critical demand for producing baccalaureate and masters level computing and engineering professionals in the South Puget Sound. SET’s 850+ students are currently enrolled in four undergraduate degree programs: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Systems, Computer Science and Systems, and Information Technology, in addition to a Master of Science degree in Computer Science and Systems, and a professional master’s degree in Cybersecurity and Leadership, which is managed in partnership with UW Tacoma’s Milgard School of Business. Our MS in Computer Science and Systems has recently expanded by adding interdisciplinary, data centric tracks that leverage the research strengths of other academic units on campus, particularly in Data Science, GIS, Bioinformatics, Distributed Systems, Cybersecurity and Cyber-Physical Systems.

SET will be expanding its degree offerings with state approved funding, to start Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering starting in fall 2020. There are plenty opportunities for collaboration between different programs within SET and other schools at UW Tacoma, including the Center for Urban Waters, the Urban Studies program and the Environmental Science program in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. Other opportunities also exist with programs in both Tacoma, Seattle, and Bothell campuses, such as on transportation systems, autonomous vehicles, and smart buildings.

UW Tacoma is a 46-acre, urban-serving campus that currently serves approximately 5400 students. The campus consists of architectural award winning LEED certified retrofitted historical buildings, set in the midst of the city’s museum mile situated on the high-technology corridor of Puget Sound, offering views of the historic Foss Waterway and Mount Rainier, while providing an incomparable gateway to Pacific Northwest recreation opportunities. A Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a closely related field is required.
