Overview

The Outreach and Communications Manager will promote opportunities for public officials, policy makers, journalists, business leaders, advocacy groups and others to visit campus, convene meetings, and participate in Events. The Outreach & Communications Manager also develop events and activities designed to increase the visibility of Princeton's research and teaching activities. The Outreach and Communications Manager will also identify opportunities for faculty, researchers and students to participate in public hearings, task forces and other forums to share research and information.

 

The Outreach and Communications Manager will oversee the Office of Public Affairs social media channels and other external communications tools including the development of content. The Outreach and Communications Manager will be responsible for developing written and graphic materials to support the outreach efforts.

 

The successful candidate will be a highly effective manager responsible for developing, implementing and leading robust outreach initiatives to allow opinion leaders and others to interact, in person and virtually, with faculty, students, administrators and others to increase understanding regarding research, discovery, student engagement, and the impact of Princeton University on the state, region, nation, and the world. This individual will also work with other campus partners to support their efforts to convene policy makers and opinion leaders in seminars, meetings and colloquia.

 

This versatile professional must be adept at working with, and understanding the perspectives of, policy makers, academics, public officials, journalists, opinion leaders, nonprofit professionals, and industry leaders. The Outreach and Communications Manager must be able to communicate research in the sciences, social sciences, and the humanities in a compelling way to inform laypeople, should understand the relationship between research and policy development, and must be comfortable expressing the University's research and other initiatives in written and verbal communications. The Outreach and Communications Manager will be based in the Office of Public Affairs and will work collaboratively to support the work of the Communications Office, the Office of Government Affairs, the Office of Community and Regional Affairs, and with campus-based communications professionals and other external-facing units at the University.

Responsibilities

Develop external outreach initiatives, including:

- Create and implement a comprehensive and strategic outreach program including on- and

off-campus activities, social media messaging, and other outreach tools to increase the visibility of, and support for, University initiatives.

  • Expand and support the University's capacity to host and convene events related to Princeton's research and teaching
  • Identify opportunities for faculty, researchers ,and students to participate in meetings, public hearings, task forces, and other forums to share research and information
  • Find, curate and compile relevant content from University sources that can be used effectively in outreach

- Work with campus-based colleagues to support outreach efforts across the University community.

Manage the Office of Public Affairs communications efforts, including:

  • Plan implement and monitor a social media strategy for a statewide and regional
  • Develop materials to support outreach an communications

Monitor various on- and off-campus communications platforms.

Monitor legislation and regulations as needed to support the work of the Public Affairs team. Support external relationships with statewide advocacy organizations, professional associations, business groups, and other higher education institutions.

Qualifications
  • Three or more years of experience working in a public policy arena, political campaigns, journalism, or similar environments.
  • Excellent writing, editing and presentation skills. Project management experience.
  • Experience in meeting or event planning.
  • Experience with social media messaging across a range of platforms.
  • Familiarity with Drupal, MS Office, web tools, and other common communications tools and social media platforms.
  • Ability to work evening and weekend events as needed.
  • Knowledge of Princeton University
