DESCRIPTION

The Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) an organized research unit at UCSD, receives partial funding from the National Institutes of Health and is part of a new national research consortium, the Clinical and Translational Science Award recipients. The mission of the ACTRI is to create an environment that advances health care through interactions between basic scientists, clinical investigators, community physicians, and patients. The ACTRI also serves as the coordinating center for multidisciplinary educational programs in translational research. It is under the direction of the Dean and Associate Vice Chancellor for Translational Medicine at UC San Diego.

This position applies advanced technical expertise for system integration and engineering to support the needs of the ACTRI groups, and related multiple health research and development activities.

The primary technical responsibilities of this position include the analysis, specification, design, and implementation of software and communication solutions to support complex infrastructures for advanced scientific computing and large-scale data management. Performs complex Windows/Unix/Linux and cloud services administration tasks, including moderate programming (mostly shell/Perl scripts) at both the application and system level; configuring and maintaining GPU farms; configuring and automating system tasks (e.g., using Cfengine, Puppet or Chef tools); setup networks and firewalls; design, implement or configure storage architectures; setup virtualization platforms and cloud environments, etc.

Furthermore, constantly seeks out and evaluate next generation technologies that support future project needs, and then devise plans for their integration into existing production systems. Responsible for overall performance and system reliability by monitoring, maintaining, administering, developing, and testing applications and systems related to large, complex, clinical and biomedical research infrastructure. Other activities include, participation in planning and contributions towards grant proposals and scientific journal papers, providing technical assistance/training to other ACTRI groups, DBMI personnel, and technical collaborations with other related projects and Health Sciences activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • A minimum of three (3+) years or more of relevant experience.

  • Extensive experience engineering and maintaining research and/or production environments on a VMWare platform. Experience with databases, file storage, web services is required. Significant working knowledge of various shell scripts under Linux and Windows is required.

  • Experience with High-performance computing clusters (e.g., with SGE, Condor), distributed computing platforms (e.g., MPI, Map-Reduce/Hadoop), of other virtualization technologies (e.g. Xen, KVM) and cloud computing is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of at least one of the following programming languages: Java, C/C++, PHP, Python, Perl, *SQL is highly desirable.

  • Proven ability to implement and integrate the components of diverse, cross-platform systems in an innovative fashion. Advanced knowledge of and experience with software utilities, such as compilers, profilers, debuggers, protocol analyzers.

  • Strong experience with installing, configuring, and production-level operation of networking equipment (e.g., Cisco, Juniper), networked and auto-tiered storage (e.g., NAS, SAN, NetApp, EMC), and related technologies.

  • Thorough knowledge of operating system internals, communication protocols, and system utilities (such as Linux, Windows 7, 2008 R2 (and later), and other more specialized operating systems).

  • Experience in the application of this knowledge to the configuration and operation of computing systems. Experience with relevant operating system commands, configurations, built-in databases, communication protocols, and system utilities.

  • Demonstrated experience in creating or managing servers with varying Operating Systems, including Linux, Windows, particularly within VMWare environments.

  • Knowledge and experience in the design, installation, configuration, troubleshooting, programming and scripting of a multi user environment comprising of Linux, Active Directory, SUS, SQL, DHCP, and Anti Virus servers.

  • Experience programming with languages such as SQL, Shell Scripting, and application development environments relevant to systems programming. Some experience with Object Oriented programing environments will be helpful.

  • Advanced experience in secure data processing management methods using commercial cloud providers and hybridized systems.

  • Demonstrated experience with private and public cloud services administration (AWS/Azure) and operations for complex configurations, in support of highly secure workloads.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Expert knowledge in web servers (e.g.Apace, Tomcat), relational databases & database modeling (e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQL) administration and features is required.
  • Experience with non-relational databases (e.g. Cassandra, Redis, MongoDB, CouchDB) and SQL Server or Oracle is desirable.
  • Experience in operations of highly available enterprise IT environment, with heterogeneous workloads and operating systems.
  • Experience with Clinical Research Data Management Software and Electronic Medical Record systems software.
  • Experience in security operations and implementation of policies to meet regulatory compliance needs (HIPAA, HITECH etc.)
