Immediate Opening:

The Road Maintenance Technician job series of job classifications describes positions in which the major function is to install, maintain and repair pathways, driveways, walkways, curbs, ADA ramps, fences, retaining walls, bollards, street signs, benches and other site furniture. Using manual or mechanical means, Road Maintenance Technicians perform a variety of duties including digging of trenches, relocating and raising of utility boxes and electrical power conduits, and installing of drainage and header board. The Road Maintenance Technician must be able to operate power equipment such as tractors, loaders, bobcats, trenchers, boring tools, blowers, roto-tillers and dump trucks as necessary during road maintenance operations.

What you will do in this role:


You will be responsible for (but not limited to):


  • Under the direction of a lead or supervisor or Technician II, employees in this classification are responsible for routine duties on a daily or weekly basis.

  • Once work priorities are established, employees in this classification are expected to work independently. They may consult from with the supervisor, Lead or other Road Maintenance Technicians as needed

  • Work in all areas is reviewed by the supervisor, Lead or a Road Maintenance Technician II.

  • The Road Maintenance Technician I may have responsibility for directing temporary workers.

  • May work with other grounds workers.

  • Dig trenches by manual or mechanical means.

  • Relocate and raise utility boxes and electrical power conduits.

  • Install drainage and header board.

  • Operate power equipment such as tractors, loaders, bobcats, trenchers, boring tools, blowers, roto-tiller and dump trucks.

  • Install and repair fences, retaining walls, bollards, benches, trashcans, ash urns, street signs and other site furniture.

  • Install and repair asphalt pathways and driveways.

  • Install and repair concrete driveways, walkways, curbs and ADA ramps.

  • Install and repair brick walkways and cinder block walls.

  • Perform groundskeeper duties related to road maintenance projects.

  • Adhere to safety rules.

To be successful in this role you must bring:


  • High School diploma or GED and one years' experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods in all types of outside weather conditions

  • Ability to understand and give verbal instructions.

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply safety procedures.

  • Basic computer skills.

  • Valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's license.

Physical Requirements*:


  • Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class C Driver's License.

  • Constantly stand/walk.

  • Frequently kneel/crawl, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully, use telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.

  • Occasionally perform desk-based computer tasks, operate hand and foot controls, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh more than 40 pounds.

  • Rarely, perform seated work, grasp lightly, work/reach above shoulders, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), sort/file paperwork or parts, write by hand.


Working Conditions


  • Required to wear issued uniform and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.

  • May be exposed to high voltage electricity, work in confined spaces or at heights up to 10 feet.

  • When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.
