The Women and Gender Studies Institute (WGSI) in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position in the area of Feminist Cultural Studies. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an expected start date of July 1, 2020, or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Women and Gender Studies, Cultural Studies or a cognate discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. We seek candidates whose teaching interests compliment and strengthen our existing departmental strengths. Candidates must have a minimum of two years experience teaching in a degree granting program at the undergraduate level, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and facility in both large lecture and small seminar contexts. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent and innovative pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities. The successful candidate will have a breadth of training and experience in feminist approaches to reading, writing, and analyzing cultural production. We are seeking candidates whose teaching grapples with intersectional areas of gender, race, class, sexuality, ability, coloniality, Indigeneity, and other important differences, as well as contributes to or is in conversation with WGSI’s strength in transnational, postcolonial, diasporic, decolonial, and indigenous feminist studies. Strong candidates will successfully incorporate their pedagogical research into the classroom and engage with current debates and initiatives in the field.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample syllabi, course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.

Duties will consist of teaching and supervision at undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will be expected to teach the core courses in WGSI, as well as specialized courses in popular culture and feminist cultural studies. This position is located at the University of Toronto’s St. George campus.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

For the past 40 years, WGSI has trained students to think about the entanglements of gender, race and sexuality. Our teaching and scholarship address how colonialisms, national borders, labour, and migration shape life, knowledge, and politics. WGSI adopts a transnational approach to women and gender studies, an approach which speaks both to our location in Toronto, but also to anti-colonial, post-colonial and transnational contexts here and throughout the world. WGSI’s distinctive strength in transnational feminist studies is characterized by interdisciplinary research; critical pedagogy; collaborations with a broad group of affiliated faculty; and work with a wide range of communities and other social justice actors.
