Essential Functions:
The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. As of Spring 2019, we currently enroll approximately 35,000 students in which 58% identify as Latinx, 9% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 6% as Black/African American, 19% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 8% as multiracial. FCC is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.
Providing coordination of the Reading and Writing Center on the Fresno City College campus and/or at off-site community campus locations, the coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Collaborating with area faculty and other student support services in the design of instructional materials, activities, and intervention strategies to support writing and reading coursework across the curriculum;

  • Collaborating with outreach services to provide workshops and support for scholarships and other job or education-related activities on campus;

  • Evaluating the suitability of instructional material, software, and media associated with the center;

  • Developing mechanisms to identify, diagnose, and address individual student learning difficulties;

  • Fostering collegiality between tutors and faculty;

  • Developing strategies for enhancing student learning at all levels;

  • Planning, scheduling, and supervising the day-to-day delivery of tutoring and supplemental learning activities in the center, satellite tutorial labs, and online tutoring based on student need and faculty requests

  • Recruiting, hiring, and training tutors/student aides under the direction of the division dean including completing regular performance evaluations of tutors/student aides

  • Creating student and service learning outcomes and regularly evaluating them and keeping and reporting accurate records;

  • Coordinating appropriate staff development activities;

  • Developing policies and procedures as a part of the center's operations;

  • Establishing planning priorities as they relate to the center;

  • Documenting records for College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Tutor Certification Program Levels I and II;

  • Collecting data from the college database and student sign-in sheets, and student satisfaction surveys, to provide end-of-semester and annual reports;

  • Participating in all appropriate departmental and college activities and promoting the center throughout the campus;

  • Participating in regular professional development;

  • Serving as instructor of record in the center, teaching as assigned, and updating curriculum as required;

  • Procuring textbooks and other support materials for tutor use, materials for students (citations, study tips, calendars, etc.), and online resources

  • Planning and monitoring budgets and seeking additional funding sources when necessary;

  • Coordinating outreach to ensure the Reading and Writing Center is represented at student functions such as at Ram Ready, College Relations Open House, orientation, and special events, and coordinating with the PIO;

  • Conducting Reading and Writing Center staff meetings monthly and more often as needed;

  • Collaborating with faculty to develop intervention strategies for the retention of disproportionately impacted groups to reduce equity gaps for students; this includes integration of services within campus initiatives such as the Student Equity & Achievement, Core 9, Guided Pathways, and the development of co-requisites related to tutoring;

  • Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;

  • Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;

  • Teaching assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed; and

  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • The minimum qualifications to teach any master’s level discipline in which learning assistance or tutoring is provided at the college where the coordinator is employed;

    OR

  • A master’s in education, educational psychology, or instructional psychology, other master’s degree with emphasis in adult learning theory;

    OR

  • A valid California Community College Credential;

    OR

  • The equivalent education and/or experience(requires an equivalency).

    AND

    All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated recent experience coordinating a reading/writing or tutorial center including knowledge of supplemental learning assistance;
  • Demonstrated recent experience with online tutoring;
  • Knowledge and experience in computer assisted instruction in writing;
  • Knowledge of culturally relevant pedagogy, assessment methods, instructional materials, and strategies that meet the needs of a diverse student population;
  • Knowledge of tutorial objectives, principals, methods, and techniques;
  • Ability to plan and organize related programs and activities;
  • Demonstrated experience in budget planning and monitoring;
  • Teaching experience, including online teaching preferably in a community college;
  • Experience and knowledge of curriculum development, instructional technology and innovative teaching methods;
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues related to college writing and reading as well as current legislation as it relates to tutoring, developmental education, and other state-wide strategies such as AB 705, Guided Pathways and Student Equity and Achievement;
  • Proficiency with various computer software programs including Microsoft Office suite and Ellucian (formerly Datatel) Colleague or similar higher education platform, learning management systems such as Canvas or Blackboard, and tutoring databases such as SARS or TutorTrac;
  • Demonstrated experience with data analysis and data dashboards, such as Tableau Data Dashboard;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • An understanding of, and commitment to the role of a comprehensive community college in an urban multi-cultural setting, with prior experience in working with non-traditional students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds;
  • Experience and skill in addressing issues of equity in the classroom;
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.


Conditions of Employment:
182 duty days per year

Salary and Benefits:
Salary is $58,939 - $88,733 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,082 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews. State Center Community College District (SCCCD) was formed in 1964 when it assumed control of Fresno City College and Reedley College. SCCCD serves approximately one million people and 18 unified and high school districts in more than 5,500 square miles of urban and rural territory, including most of Fresno and Madera counties and portions of Kings and Tulare counties. SCCCD is governed by a seven-member board of trustees who represent seven trustee areas. Total district enrollment for the fall semester 2012 is over 34,000 students. SCCCD is a merit system district with over 2,300 faculty and classified staff represented by the California School Employees Association (CSEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The total operating budget for SCCCD in 2012-13 is $168 million. 

Fresno City College, established in 1910, enrolls in excess of 22,000 students and offers more than 100 associate of arts and science degree programs and 60 certificate of achievement programs in vocational/occupational areas. Reedley College, established in 1926, is located in Reedley (approximately 25 miles southeast of Fresno) and enrolls approximately 6,200 students in a variety of courses and degree programs in occupational education and the arts and sciences. SCCCD operates three educational centers with a combined enrollment of approximately 8,300 students. The Willow International, Madera and Oakhurst centers offer programs in general education for transfer and two-year degrees. In addition, the district offers occupational and technical training at its Career and Technology Center and the Training Institute.
