The Department of Theatre at Coastal Carolina University, accredited by NAST (National Association of Schools of Theatre), invites applications for the full-time position of Assistant Professor in Theatre (Music Director). This is a 9-month, tenure track appointment to begin August 2020. The Department offers B.F.A. degrees (audition only) in Musical Theatre, Acting, Physical Theatre, and Design and Production, as well as a B.A. degree in Theatre. Located in Conway, South Carolina, just 9 miles from Myrtle Beach, this highly collaborative and rigorous department maintains a six production mainstage season, in addition to new works and staged readings in our Maymester series to connect students with working professionals. Department faculty maintain professional careers in their respective disciplines and assist students in seeking summer employment. Senior B.F.A. Students participate in a New York Showcase for industry professionals, Physical Theatre students spend a year abroad in Italy, and Coastal Carolina University offers many other study abroad opportunities for students and faculty.
We seek an ambitious, energetic, and quality driven teacher-scholar to join one of the nation’s top undergraduate Theatre programs, serving over 150 majors. Job duties include: serving as Music Director for two to three musicals per year, conducting the orchestras for the musical theatre pieces in the production season, accompanying rehearsals, performances, guest artist master classes, and recruitment undertakings. Courses may include Repertory for The Musical Theatre, Music Skills for the Actor, Musical Theatre History, and accompaniment/music direction for Musical Theatre Scene Study.
Required qualifications: M.F.A., earned doctorate, or commensurate professional experience in the field. Exceptional keyboard and sight reading skills and ability to provide musical direction for a variety of musical theatre styles. Demonstrated experience as an instructor at the university level is required. Basic keyboard programming, arranging and orchestration skills preferred with preference given to the candidate who can demonstrate a commitment to diversity, student learning, and inclusive pedagogy. Additional qualifications: ability to coach Musical Theatre students, direct musical ensembles in the context of musical productions, and teach music skills for actors. Professional experience preferred.
