Job Summary:

Engaging in reflection is a central component of the University’s strategic vision. The Program Coordinator for Alumni and Community Initiatives has primary responsibility for planning, implementing, and evaluating a wide range of programs and resources offered by the Cothran Center for Vocational Reflection that facilitate and encourage students nearing graduation, alumni, and community members to reflect on their sense of calling/vocation.

In addition to holding primary responsibility for initiatives targeting students nearing graduation, alumni, and community members, the Program Coordinator for Alumni and Community Initiatives contributes to the mission of the Cothran Center and to the University’s strategic vision through collaboration with other Cothran Center staff members to develop and implement programs and resources that engage current Furman students, faculty and staff in vocational reflection.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:

Programming for Students Nearing Graduation

1. Responsible for developing new programming for students nearing graduation to engage in vocational exploration and discernment. This will involve researching opportunities, planning, budgeting, logistics, implementation, and evaluation of initiatives. Initiatives may include, but are not limited to:

  • Domestic travel program that emphasizes vocational exploration for juniors and seniors by leveraging established relationships with alumni and the organizations they lead.

  • Initiative that works with a cohort of seniors to discern and find placement in a service opportunity in the first year(s) following graduation and to provide continued support to the cohort during their service.

2. Shared responsibility for engaging in one-on-one vocational dialogue sessions with students at their request. Though many of these may be scheduled appointments, flexibility is required for drop-in conversation, as needed and able.

Programming for Alumni

3. Responsible for planning, budgeting, logistics, implementation, and evaluation of the Cothran Center’s existing Alumni Programs including, but not limited to:

  • Becherer Alumni pilgrimages: Biennial international travel or domestic travel pilgrimages of 7-14 days during the summer.
  • Becherer On-campus retreats: Biennial weekend retreats on Furman’s campus during the summer.

4. Coordinates the Cothran Center’s alumni liaison or advisory group, working closely with advisors to improve the Cothran Center’s alumni programs and to develop new opportunities to support alumni along their vocational journey --- opportunities that are consistent with the Cothran Center’s mission and goals, especially as they connect to The Furman Advantage. This may include, but is not limited to:

  • Spiritual retreats: Opportunities for spiritual retreats for alumni across various spiritual traditions.
  • One-on-one vocational dialogue sessions with alumni by request.

5. Provides planning, organization, and staffing for alumni events, e.g., Homecoming.

Programming for Community Members

6. Responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating the Cothran Center’s Community Initiatives for campus and wider Upstate communities. These include, but are not limited to, the following existing programs and events:

  • The Good Lecture: An annual event in which a noted speaker shares their vocational journey.
  • Dinner Dialogues: An event that occurs in the fall and the spring that brings together faculty and staff to discuss topics related to vocation.
  • Community workshops/retreats

7. Solicits articles from the Center’s speakers for the biennial Journal and providing editorial oversight for its publication.

General Duties

8. Provides regular updates to the Faculty Director on programs and resources for students nearing graduation, alumni and community members.

9. Maintains periodic communication with the Center’s friends and supporters in the Greenville community and beyond, including updates in the annual newsletter/report.

10. Responsible for maintaining budgets for initiatives for students nearing graduation, alumni and community members and ensuring costs are within budgeted parameters and funding regulations.

11. In collaboration with the Faculty Director, identifies grant opportunities, writes grant proposals for funding initiatives related to students nearing graduation, alumni and community members, and writes reports following the completion of funded initiatives. This involves collaboration and communication with the Grants Office.

12. Works with Cothran Center staff to promote and publicize Center programs.

13. Works in partnership with the Program Coordinator for Student Initiatives to plan, implement, and evaluate the Summer Connections residential community-based service-learning program for entering first year students, held in June each year.Tasks may include: 1) making arrangements with community partners for students to be involved in service learning at those sites; 2) conducting site-visits to service learning sites; 3) developing and leading pre-service, during service and post-service reflection activities for students.

14. Helps staff student resource fair events and tables for the Cothran Center during events such as Summer Orientation, Accepted Students Day, Student Organization Fair, Family Weekend, etc.

15. Serves as a resource to Cothran Center staff in planning, implementing, and evaluating the Cothran Center’s programs for Furman faculty and staff.

16. Serves on relevant university committees and task force groups that need particular leadership and expertise on vocation/calling and reflection.

17. Engages in professional development to better support the work and mission of the Center, as well as the Program Coordinator’s own personal and professional growth.

18. May supervise and mentor a student worker or intern, as needed and able.

19. Other duties as assigned.

Relationships

  • Regular contact and collaboration with Cothran Center staff and with alumni, community members, faculty, staff, student interns, and members of other departments to plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate programs and resources, as well as present information related to mutual goals.
  • Regular contact with alumni to exchange factual information and explanations of programming.
  • Regular contact and collaboration with community organizations to establish community engagement opportunities.
  • Occasional contact with Associate Dean for Mentoring and Advising, Mentoring Coordinator, Alumni Office, Internship Office, and Malone Center for Career Engagement in support of strategic initiatives.
  • Occasional travel for programs, conferences, and special events, including extended overnight travel. This includes frequent contact with diverse groups of people in various environments.
  • Routine contact with students, parents, supporters and the general public.

Responsibility for Final Decisions

Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated process or steps. Some work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.

Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur, but may affect the work of others within the unit. The individual needs to be able to trace errors and make corrections when needed.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred. Educational background in one of the following areas desired: Higher education, counseling, social work, theology.
  • Three to five years of relevant experience. Experience in an alumni- or community-focused role in a higher education setting preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work on a team and professionally represent Furman University to students, stakeholders, and alumni.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to present and facilitate discussions on vocation and reflection for various audiences.
  • Familiarity with resources on vocation and calling.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and the ability to interact positively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to assess programs and initiatives in terms of program goals, learning outcomes, and affective measures.

Work Conditions

  • Work requires managing multiple projects, communications, and outreach programs simultaneously.
  • Work is performed under usual office conditions and at off-site locations.
  • Hours frequently need to be flexible to include working with various programs and events that are held during weekend and evening hours.
  • Work requires attention to detail and flexibility to assist the supervisor, when needs arise.
