This is a nine (9) month fixed-term instructor position beginning in August 2020. The successful candidate will join a strong faculty in the elementary education and middle grades education programs within the School of Teaching and Learning at one of the nation’s most beautiful and dynamic universities. In a program that highly values collaboration and diversity, the successful candidate’s primary teaching responsibilities will be to teach courses in elementary and middle grades social studies methods with a particular focus on diversity, equity, and culturally relevant pedagogy. The successful candidate will also be required to teach other courses as assigned and supervise teacher candidates in field experiences and internships. The successful candidate will assess and evaluate student learning outcomes, skills, and dispositions and engage in service to the institution, region, profession, and public schools. Preference will be given to candidates who can work collaboratively across disciplines to address the education of students living in diverse environments.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

The successful candidate will teach courses in elementary and middle grades social studies methods with a focus on diversity, equity, and culturally relevant pedagogy and other courses as needed. Additional duties include mentoring and coaching students in field and clinical settings. Expertise and experience in teaching social studies courses is expected.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate should document: Master’s degree or above in Curriculum and Instruction, Social Studies Education, Multicultural/Diversity Education or a related field in education from an accredited institution by the appointment date. The successful candidate must have:
1. A minimum of three years of successful public-school teaching experience at the elementary and/or middle grades level and eligibility for teacher licensure in North Carolina;
2. Evidence of ability to and/or experience with teaching courses in social studies methods in the elementary and middle grades;
3. Evidence of ability to supervise and mentor teacher candidates;
4. Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates who can enhance the School of Teaching and Learning’s commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice through teaching and service are encouraged to apply. Additional preferred qualifications include:
1. Evidence of a functional knowledge of the Educational Teacher Performance
Assessment (edTPA);
2. Experience supervising and supporting teacher candidates in field settings; and
3. Experience teaching at the college or university level
