Introduction:


The Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) is Stanford's thought leader for understanding the economic challenges, opportunities, and policies affecting people around the world. At its core are SIEPR's over 100 faculty members who represent all seven schools at Stanford. With SIEPR support, they study a vast array of economic policy-relevant areas in the U.S. and around the world, collaborating with other established and up-and-coming researchers from within and outside Stanford.

JOB PURPOSE:


The SIEPR Financial Analyst partners with the SIEPR management and leadership teams to help ensure SIEPR is an intentional, sustainable, and forward-looking service organization.


The Financial Analyst will lead the process of building budgets, analyzing variances and optimizing financial reporting to SIEPR's stakeholders, including its faculty, staff, supporters and the university. These financial reports will allow the management and leadership teams to make strategic decisions about how to develop and allocate resources across the programs and services that are at the core of SIEPR's work.


Reporting to the Director of Operations and Planning, the Financial Analyst will manage the daily operations of the finance team to ensure all reporting and budgeting deadlines are met in a timely, efficient and professional manner. The Financial Analyst will also work with other SIEPR teams, including SIEPR's centers and labs, to develop appropriate policies and procedures that ensure financial transactions meet all guidelines and are entered into the system completely and efficiently.


The successful candidate will have a strong background and proven track record in finance, financial reporting, financial analysis and strategic thinking. S/he will be able to work efficiently with limited supervision and manage multiple projects with competing priorities while demonstrating excellent working relationships with leadership, management and staff. S/he will have excellent problem solving, analytical and strong oral and written communication skills and will be able to address problems that arise with courtesy and professionalism. Past experience with financial reporting and analysis at Stanford is a plus.


CORE DUTIES*:


  • Perform complex finance functions and/or activities requiring advanced knowledge and application of internal policies, external regulations, precedents, and systems. May manage a key area within a finance operation or department/unit.

  • Perform and design ad hoc analyses of large complex data sets: reconcile complex accounts. Identify and resolve complex issues which may span multiple areas.

  • Construct and assemble data for budgeting and decision making; develop conclusions, and present high level summary of recommendations. May develop annual budget for individual department/unit.

  • Conduct analysis and resolution, and recognize exceptions. Participate in developing solutions that may require policy changes or the development of new processes; maintain broader organizational perspective in decision making.

  • Execute internal control programs established by management, research new regulations, and recommend and implement approved changes. May manage compliance program for area of responsibility, and create complex compliance reports.

  • Develop reports and presentations of complex financial data and metrics for management and third parties.

  • Participate as a member of a project team; support new initiatives. Make decisions determining approach to managing and completing processes.

  • Contribute to unit and organization strategy; assist in the development of change management plans and materials as needed.

  • Develop and maintain desktop procedures and process documentation for area of responsibility.

  • Define requirements, develop and implement complex test cases, perform system testing and analyze results.

  • Participate in critical analysis of existing systems and processes, and identify opportunities for process improvement.

  • Provide consulting advice to client group(s); serve as a resource on matters that require specific technical, financial, or subject matter expertise; support negotiations with external partners.

  • May supervise, train, coach, and review the work of other staff, as needed. Contribute primarily through applying individual expertise.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:



Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and four years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Advanced proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial systems; internet and computer literacy.

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Strong communication skills, including ability to prepare materials for and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences and client groups.

  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to contribute to or lead part of a multi-functional team.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:


  • Constantly sitting.

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork.

  • Occasionally stand/walk, lift/carry objects weighing 11-20 pounds.

  • Rarely reach/work above shoulder.
