Job Details
The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Denver is home to five academic departments: Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geography and the Environment, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy offering over 30 degrees ranging from Bachelor of Arts to Doctor of Philosophy as well as having many active research labs funded through extramural
sources. The College operates under the leadership of the dean, the associate dean, the assistant dean of budget and operations and the department chairs. Through the office of the dean, the leadership team advocates for science and math across campus and guides decision making and resource management in order to best serve students, faculty and staff in daily operations.
General Summary
Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Assistant Dean for Finance and Operations is responsible for all financial and many administrative activities at the College including without limitation, financial policies and procedures, budget development, financial controls, personnel matters, and strategic initiatives.
Essential Functions
- Develop and manage the current and multi-year operating budget as well as designated funds, gifts and endowments in a manner aligned with the Colleges strategic priorities and University policies and plan.
- In collaboration with departments, budget and forecast graduate student enrollments and model projected tuition and discounts.
- Forecast tuition and operating budgets on a quarterly basis for Controllers Office.
- Collaborate with departments, Dean's leadership team and financial aid to manage and award scholarships.
- Ensure all financial transactions are completed timely and accurately.
- Supervise and coordinate all financial functions of the college including, but not limited to, payroll, purchasing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and grant and gift reporting.
- Complete day-to-day on-line entry including journal and budget entries.
- Manage all personnel actions including position postings, offers of employment, separations and position changes.
- Review and approve leave requests for Dean's staff.
- Collaborate with department chairs and Dean on the annual merit process.
- Serve as primary liaison with the Office of Human Resources and Inclusive Community.
- Analyze and model enrollments, salaries, adjunct needs, faculty course loads, graduate financial aid, departmental salaries and expenses, and other areas.
- Review and manage contracts for large purchases as the liaison with procurement and legal.
- Manage two direct reports responsible for graduate programs and grants.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Advanced ability to visualize, articulate, and solve problems quantitatively and qualitatively and make sound decisions based on available information.
- Capacity to solve complex problems with creative solutions.
- Experience in planning, organizing, and managing processes that bring about the successful completion of specific deliverables.
- Excellent computer skills, including facility with spreadsheet and database applications.
- Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Enthusiasm for working in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Seven years of progressive work experience involving budget preparation and monitoring.
- Management experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in business, finance, accounting, higher education, law, or related field.
- Experience with budget operations in a higher education setting.
- Proficiency with Banner software.
- Familiarity with generally accepted accounting practices.
Work Schedule
Typically weekdays 8:00am - 4:30pm with evenings and weekends as required.

Salary Range
Salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
