Job Description Summary

The Sr. Director of Communications and Stewardship manages and coordinates the activities of the Communications and Stewardship units within Penn Medicine Development and Alumni Relations.

The Sr. Director will provide leadership and vision in planning and implementing effective communications, and stewardship to support Penn Medicine’s fundraising goals. Manages a staff of nine including five direct reports and four indirect reports whose responsibilities include proposal writing, editing, publications, production of VIP acknowledgements, recognition/cultivation/stewardship events remarks and support, stewardship and Health System related events.

Reports to Sr. Executive Director of Communications and External Affairs.

Job Description

Specific Responsibilities

Provides strategic oversight to Penn Medicine communications and stewardship efforts. Works with senior leadership to incorporate communications and stewardship efforts into overall PMDAR fundraising and engagement goals. Directs the support and creation of principal gift level proposals and vision statements. Manages issues related to senior leadership (Dean, President of the University, CEO of UPHS, etc.) in regards to letters, remarks and other written materials. Acts as a liaison with the UPHS Marketing design team to support the graphic design and related needs of the PMDAR communications. Oversees and manages all budget decisions for the Communications and Stewardship team. Directs efforts with the central DAR Communications and Stewardship teams in regards to University wide media. Coordinates and provides content for digital media team. Works with Director of Communications to develop communications and marketing materials for the campaign, special projects etc. Works with Director of Stewardship to develop a comprehensive stewardship program for Penn Medicine. Manages a school-wide donor relations program focused on individuals, corporations, and foundations. Designs long-term stewardship and recognition programs. Develops and implements policies and procedures needed to run a sophisticated donor relations program. Lead and direct a staff of managers and individual contributors to achieve optimum results by:

Establishing priorities and goals for each Director and department, and ensuring goals cascade to all staff.

Managing staffing needs and identifying areas for organizational development updates or changes

Setting clear performance expectations and holding staff accountable for outcomes through frequent feedback and coaching

Ensuring open communications among team members, engaging in team building efforts and holding regular staff meetings that embrace and support the group’s diversity

Inspiring and motivating staff to achieve optimum results for direct reports and their teams

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. Seven to ten years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising, public relations, marketing, or related field. Strong background in managing a team. Experience in academic or healthcare strongly preferred. Ability to develop strong relationships with a wide range of constituencies both within and outside the Health System. Excellent interpersonal communication skills, strong organizational skills, and an ability to manage multiple tasks and projects under deadline.
