Description:Under the direction of the Chief of Police or designee, the campus police sergeant is responsible for performing, supervising, or assigning subordinate personnel to a full range of public safety enforcement protection, security, investigation, and administrative functions to ensure best police practices are utilized in response to reported crimes; in solving criminal cases; and, in crime prevention practices by analyzing data, controlling evidence, preparing documentation, making recommendations to supervisors, administrators, justice system authorities, and to providing testimony in court and campus administrative hearings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Investigates criminal violations, judicial violations, traffic crashes and violations, and citizen complaints. Assigns and supervises shift duties and ensures the completion of stated duties for the shift by visually and physically inspecting completed duties and assignments as required. (This could be required during periods of extreme weather conditions). Assists and/or directs securing the area and containing any emergency situation, and assists with the evacuation, if necessary, and determining the cause or origin of an emergency.Supervises and performs investigations, including surveillance, interviews of witnesses, victims, and suspects, gathering of intelligence, ensures the security of and investigation of crime scenes.Responsible for ensuring officers provide adequate security coverage and police protection for all areas of campus.Performs all duties expected of certified Georgia Police Officer.Ensures that all division administration (forms and reports) is completed in a timely fashion; reviews each officer’s reports and initials or signs as applicable; if complete and correct, forwards the report up the chain of command; if found to be incomplete or contains errors, returns the report for corrections. Responsible for supervising and assisting assigned staff and others in the performance of police functions and duties. Interviews, interrogates or surveillance, or supervises interviews, interrogations, or surveillance of witnesses, victims, and suspects.Reviews and approves assigned personnel’s reporting responsibilities e.g., accident/incident narrative, property description, dates, citation/warrant information satisfies elements of charge(s); required GCIC/NCIC inputs are performed; photographs, witness statements, and documents for either prosecution or administrative adjudication are included, are accurate, effective, and conform with legal decisions, laws, policy, and rules.Prepares and submits requests for search and arrest warrants. Provides legal testimony in court hearings/proceedings. Initiates on-spot corrective action for inappropriate actions or behaviors (violations of policy, rules, or verbal directives) encountered or observed of police officers, civilian employees, and student employees as necessary, and immediate notification of such corrective action to appropriate supervisor. Functions as a liaison with city, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and investigators, and court officials to provide information and evidence necessary for detection, investigation or prosecution of criminal violations; to collect and distribute criminal intelligence information.Conducts routine inspections of assigned personnel and equipment; routinely inventories police equipment assigned to respective division, shift, unit or assigned personnel.May assist with investigative activities regarding violations of federal statutes and coordination with appropriate federal law enforcement agencies and the United States Attorney’s Office for referral of violations committed for prosecution. Routinely performs crime prevention and community relations activities to include meeting with other campus members, groups, organizations, parents, and visitors.Performs VIP security and surveillance work as assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School or GED
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • 5 years experience as a GAPOST certified peace officer in good standing as defined by GAPOST.
  • Currently employed or have been employed in the last 12 months by a GAPOST recognized law enforcement agency.
  • NOTE: Passing or qualifying scores are adopted from the requirements set by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council.
  • Must maintain annual certification and state training requirements. Must obtain and maintain additional certifications as required by the College.
  • Must pass pre-employment testing (if applicable), criminal history check (no felony convictions or convictions of moral turpitude), background check, physical, drug test, psychological and/or polygraph exam, and credit history check.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement, criminal law and/or security and criminal procedural law terminology. Ability to define elements within federal, state, county, municipal laws and College regulations.
  • Ability to attend court and provide appropriate testimony on behalf of the college.
  • Ability to learn radio codes and terminology in order to communicate clearly via two-way radio.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with students of varying ages in order to respond to problems or incidents on campus and determine appropriate disciplinary action.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with supervisor and co-workers. Ability to display professionalism, politeness, and good manners when dealing with co-workers, management, and the public.
  • Ability to work under pressure and time constraints.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to read materials written in English.
  • Skill in basic computer knowledge (Word, Excel, Internet).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three (3) years of college campus policing experience.
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related fields.
  • Georgia POST peace officer training certificates of completion:
    • Intermediate or Advanced
    • Advanced Traffic Enforcement / Accident Investigation
    • Basic Criminal Investigations
    • Interviews and Interrogations Techniques
    • Search Warrants and Affidavits
    • Field Training Officer
    • Supervisor Levels 1, 2, and 3
