Position Summary

General Responsibilities:
The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in their regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member as outlined in the college faculty handbook.

The assignment between these two roles may be adjusted based on student, department and program needs.

The Journalism department uses diverse Journalism media, including print, photo, video, audio, internet, and other multimedia methods and techniques.

The English department offers a wide range of course offerings and campus resources to uphold our strong commitment to students and their success, while providing challenging coursework in composition, literature, critical thinking, reading and creative writing. The department also provides instructional support in the Writing Across the Curriculum program and Reading Across the Disciplines.

The department maintains a focus on:
● Equity for students, staff and faculty, recognizing the substantial possibility for growth that starts with valuing the knowledge and experience people bring to the college.
● Multi-media methods, techniques, equipment and software as related to teaching journalism courses.
● Current trends in Journalism.
● Cohort-based teaching.
● Interdisciplinary teaching approaches.
● Colleague collaboration (department and college).

Position Salary Information:
Initial maximum salary placement is based on academic degree, upper/graduate level units earned, and/or related professional occupational experience per the Los Rios College Federation of Teachers (LRCFT) contract Article 2. (The initial maximum placement is Class V, Step 8).

Assignment Responsibilities

Journalism Assistant Professor (60%)
The instructional assignment may include, but is not limited to, teaching courses in all levels of Journalism offered at the college in:
● News Writing and Reporting
● Mass Media and Society
● Producing the college newspaper/website
● Producing multimedia content

English Assistant Professor (40%)
The instructional assignment may include, but is not limited to teaching courses in all levels of English offered at the college in:
● Basic Writing Skills
● Intermediate Writing Skills
● College Composition
● Advanced Composition
● Critical Thinking
● Literature
● Creative Writing
● Education
● Reading

Additional duties may include, but are not limited to:
● Serving as lead instructor for the Journalism Program at American River College.
● Acting as advisor to the American River College school newspaper.
● Overseeing student and community interactions with the Journalism Program at American River College and related organizations such as advisory boards, vocational training, and funding agencies, and professional service groups.
● Instructing in the Writing Across the Curriculum and Reading Across the Disciplines program, in computer-enriched classroom, and through online modalities.

The instructional assignment may include day, evening, online, hybrid, weekend, and/or off-campus classes.

Journalism Assistant Professor (60%)
1. Have a master’s degree from an accredited institution, completed by January 18, 2020, in Journalism; or Communication with a specialization in Journalism; OR, have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, completed by January 18, 2020, in Journalism or Communication with a specialization in Journalism; AND, have a master’s degree in English, History, Communication, Literature, Composition, Comparative Literature, any Social Science, Business, Business Administration, Marketing, Graphics, or Photography; OR, hold a California Community College Instructor’s Credential in the discipline area; OR, the equivalent.*

AND

English Assistant Professor (40%)
1. Have a master’s degree from an accredited institution, completed by January 18, 2020, in English, Literature, Comparative Literature, or Composition; OR, have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, completed by January 18, 2020, in English, Literature, Comparative Literature, or Composition, AND have a master’s degree in Linguistics, TESL, Speech, Education with a Specialization in Reading, Creative Writing, or Journalism; OR, hold a California Community College Instructor’s Credential in the discipline area; OR, the equivalent.*

2. Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
