Major Responsibilities

Teach and assess student learning in undergraduate and graduate courses across the physics curriculum. Some specialized courses may be assigned according to expertise. Additionally, the assistant professor will produce research and other scholarly and creative activities; provide service to the department and college; and provide academic advisement and mentoring to students.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

Reports to the academic department chair.

Required Qualifications

•PhD in physics, engineering or a closely related field (ABD with designated date of completion may be considered- please note: reappointment will not be considered without completed PhD prior to review date).
•Highly developed understanding of teaching theory and practice with a strong passion for continued development of academic excellence in the classroom as demonstrated by a teaching philosophy and/or prior experience that addresses such areas as how to engage and excite students both in and out of the classroom, how to integrate one’s research and creative activities into the curriculum, and how to help students draw connections between their classroom learning and the kinds of professional goals they are working to achieve.
•Ability to teach across the range of courses offered in our physics department
•Scholarly ability in physics or a closely related field as demonstrated by such things as the publication of scholarly materials, the production of substantial professional works that have achieved recognition in the business, government, education, and/or non-profit sectors, or the development of a detailed research program or agenda.
•Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

•Eagerness to contribute to Cortland’s Sustainable Energy Systems (SES) Professional Science Masters (PSM) program.
•Competency in one or more of the following: building efficiency, grid-tied battery storage, electronics.
•Research agenda with the potential for undergraduate and graduate student participation
•Experience teaching physics at the college level.
•Experience with and/or interest in working with a diverse student body and the ability to effectively engage faculty, staff, and students in a collegial and collaborative manner.
