Departmental Overview

The Office for Protection of Human Subjects (OPHS) is the administrative office that supports the Committee for Protection of Human Subjects by coordinating the review of research, keeping abreast of the changing policies, rules and regulations, and working with CPHS and researchers to address research protocol and compliance issues. OPHS also provides education and outreach to UC Berkeley investigators and functions as a liaison to other campus units such as the Sponsored Projects Office and the Office of Environment Health & Safety.

Responsibilities

As a Research Compliance Analyst 2:
  • Applies research compliance professional concepts to review routine or minimal risk research amendments and protocols to ensure that all approval criteria are met as well as Federal and State regulations; and, UCOP and UCB policies.
  • Provide support for special projects as assigned by Director.
  • Determines the appropriateness of the level of review as part of pre-review.
  • Communicates directly with investigators to resolve all concerns as identified during the review process.
  • Under general supervision, issues formal communications to funding agencies and other regulatory campus units. Properly documents all review actions in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Communicates with researchers consulting on general topics and provides guidance on how to resolve particular issues of concern and meet requirements of external regulatory bodies and to properly document these actions in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Provide support for senior staff (e.g. meeting set-up and processing). reimbursements).
  • Participates in the development and revision of standard operating procedures and guidelines.

As a Research Compliance Analyst 3:
  • Applies research compliance professional concepts to review and pre-review routine to increasingly complex research protocols applying Federal regulations, State regulations, and University policies to ensure and document University compliance, as well as documentation of compliance with the goal of safeguarding the rights and welfare of human or animal subjects used in research conducted under the auspices of the campus.
  • Provides pre- and post-guidance on preparing and revising research applications. This may include communicating with researchers and providing guidance on how to resolve particular issues and meet requirements of external regulatory bodies and/or funding agencies.
  • May lead, participate and/or administratively support major programmatic components of OPHS and/or OACU (e.g. educational outreach, inspections, occupational health and safety, audits and/or post approval monitoring).
  • Participates in general administrative support of office with customer service (e.g. general email, answering phone calls, full committee meeting support). Participates in the development, drafting and/or revision of office procedures (SOPs), policies, and guidelines to enhance the compliance program.
  • Understands and coordinates with other pertinent campus compliance units as indicated where multiple policies can impact a single project.
  • Work on special projects as assigned by Director.

Required Qualifications

As a Research Compliance Analyst 2:
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Eligibility for professional certification preferred (CPIA OR CIP).
  • At least one year of fulltime experience in human and/or animal research lab, veterinary clinic or other related animal-related activity (e.g. zoo or wildlife rehabilitation) required.
  • Requires independence, planning and decision-making abilities to complete assigned duties.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State regulations, and policies pertaining to research subjects.
  • Proficiency with computers, including ability to operate personal computer software (for example, Word, Excel, email, electronic calendaring, internet, et cetera) with sophisticated retrieval, storage, and merging capabilities.
  • Excellent customer service skills, pleasant, helpful and patient.
  • Time management skills and the flexibility to accommodate changing priorities in unit.
  • Effective, efficient and tactful oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented setting, to prioritize work, and to follow through on routine assignments with minimal direction.
  • Strong organizational skills, the ability to multi-task, and work with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to problem-solve issues; listen, interpret and confirm understanding of others' communications; and, to be objective.
  • An interest and aptitude as a life long learner.

As a Research Compliance Analyst 3:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Professional certification (CIP or CPIA) preferred.
  • At least two years fulltime experience in a compliance position, preferably directly in an IRB/ HRPP and/or IACUC office.
  • CIP (Certified IRB Professional) or CPIA (Certified Professional IACUC Administrator) eligible.
  • Demonstrates self-discipline and sound, independent judgment completing assignments.
  • Thorough knowledge and ability to apply all of the Federal, state, and university regulations, policies, and guidelines for the protection of human or animal subjects.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with quantitative and qualitative research design; scientific research concepts and terminology.
  • Working knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research design; scientific research concepts and terminology.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in public speaking and writing.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize workload and competing deadlines (i.e. excellent time management and organizational skills).
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of customers/stakeholders with excellent customer service skills.
