Position Summary:

The part-time Library Assistant works within the Collection Services and Access Services Departments at the Law Library to support ongoing library functions and operations. The Library Assistant may participate in team-based decision making that addresses library policies and procedures at an operational level.

STATUS: Part Time, 12 months, Without Benefits
WORK HOURS: Anticipated schedule of 15-20 hours weekly (30-40 bi-weekly) to be determined by the department. In this position you many not exceed 29 hours per week and 999 hours in an anniversary year.
FLSA: Non-Exempt
MINIMUM PAY: $13.00 / hour

Essential and Related Functions:

  • Responsible for supporting library functions that involve technically advanced library tasks and independent assignments such as bindery processing and withdrawing items.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and usability of the library’s physical materials by filing updates, (re)shelving materials, inventorying the collection, etc.
  • Sort and process incoming materials for the library and law school such as physical books, newspapers and magazines, microfiche/microfilm, building mail, etc.
  • Assist with document delivery services such as retrieving physical items from the university libraries, scanning physical materials, retrieving electronic materials, etc.
  • Participate in law library circulation desk operations and workflow by providing assistance to library patrons on an as needed basis.
  • Actively participate in outreach efforts including, but not limited to, creating signage for library events, library collections, and the digital display monitors.
  • Perform general copy-cataloging tasks and personalizing access points using MARC formats and national cataloging standards. Correct records for items added or withdrawn from the law library’s collection.
  • Work with supervisor to update policies, create training guides/manuals. May be asked to train new student and part-time employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Makes an effort to learn and observe quality/safety/cleanliness standards when handling the University resources (i.e., workspace, equipment, tools, etc.).
  • Technical Skills – Perform simple and routine work requiring basic skills and functionality in a timely, thorough and accurate manner. Readily learn new information or practice and select correct processes from clearly prescribed rules, standards or instruction. Make an effort to seek advice and clarify non-routine problems with senior work group member and/or supervisors.
  • Results Focused – Able to change work habits and approach to a particular task. Present a positive outlook and be willing to devote the time and effort necessary to perform a task well. Able to quickly identify what tasks need completed and take action before being asked or required to do so.
  • Communication and Relations – Able to speak and write clearly (within role requirements) to convey messages effectively. Make an effort to act on all requests independently and recognize when to escalate issues/problems to supervisors. Courteous and prompt when listening and responding to requests and requirements.
  • Teamwork – Participate willingly towards accomplishing work group goals. Listen carefully and attentively, encourage and accept other points of view. Demonstrate respect and concern for thoughts, feelings and rights of others.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required. Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, email applications and calendars, and using basic office equipment. One year of experience working in an office or library setting. Enthusiasm, creativity and eagerness to propose new projects and workflows as well as the ability to work independently. Flexibility, resilience and the ability to adapt to an evolving environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

BA/BS (or equivalent) preferred. Three to five years of experience working in a library setting.

Physical Requirements:

  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.

Working Conditions:

The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (as in typical office or administrative work).

Types of Work:

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
