Chaminade University of Honolulu is seeking a Dean of the School of Business & Communication who can provide strong leadership and an entrepreneurial approach to advance our mission and ensure that our academic offerings remain competitive in an increasingly challenging higher education landscape. The university needs a Dean who will act with both intentionality and urgency to address the emerging challenges and opportunities for the School of Business & Communication and be data-driven in his or her decision-making.  The University is searching for a Dean who understands our mission of service as well as the importance of our institutional culture that prizes collegiality and teamwork. We seek a leader who will build on Chaminade’s strong foundation in Business & Communication and help our university achieve even greater heights as we enter a new era for higher education and these dynamic disciplinary programs.

Under the leadership of the Provost, the Dean is responsible for the overall academic, administrative, and fiscal leadership of the School of Business and Communication, with an emphasis on stewarding and increasing academic quality, targeted enrollment and new program offerings that offer compelling value propositions to our local and regional communities.  The Dean is also responsible for maintaining and strengthening strategic relationships with alumni, benefactors, the local community and industry. The Dean will provide leadership in defining the strategic priorities and growth of the academic programs in the School of Business & Communication to enhance quality, visibility and impact locally and globally.  The Dean will advance the mission and vision of the School of Business & Communication with transparent decision-making and understanding of bottom-line fiscal implications.

Chaminade seeks a leader with a proven record in an administrative position with responsibility for developing and guiding strategy, motivating and leading a team, engaging external constituencies, and fostering inclusive practices.  The Dean must show evidence of exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills which enhance the current collaborative environment.  Additional responsibilities include:

  • Supporting student success through improved retention, progression and graduation outcomes
  • Cultivating new enrollment pathways and increasing enrollment particularly for graduate programs
  • Managing existing academic programs and developing new programs in consultation with School faculty and University leadership
  • Ensuring academic quality and integrity and stewarding the School of Business & Communication’s accreditation and alignment with IACBE;
  • Developing and leading fundraising initiatives to meet current and future School priorities;
  • Regularly interacting with industry leaders and being a strong connection between the School of Business & Communication and external stakeholders;
  • Fostering alumni engagement and relationships to support the School;
  • Overseeing the hiring and evaluation processes for School faculty and staff;
  • Demonstrating a strong commitment to and practice of shared governance; and
  • Administering all fiscal matters for the School of Business &Communication
  • Ensuring and promoting academic excellence and integrity in the School of Business & Communication through a strong commitment to the professional development of faculty
  • Fostering and maintaining the collegial and service-oriented culture of the School

Job Requirements

The Dean must show evidence of successful leadership, exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, and a proven record of success in an administrative leadership role with responsibility for developing and guiding strategy, motivating and leading a team, engaging external constituencies, and fostering collegial and inclusive practices.

Education: A doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher education is preferred.  A minimum of a Masters degree is required and should be accompanied by significant professional achievement.

Experience: At least 8 years of leadership experience is required.  At least 5 years of experience in higher education is required. 

Required Knowledge/Skills and Abilities

  • Must be organized, flexible and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite especially Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; ability to quickly pick up new software systems, including student information system and learning management system. 
  • An enthusiastic, organized self-starter capable of working independently and as part of a team supporting creative people. S/he should anticipate problems and propose solutions. 
  • Must understand the role of faculty and faculty governance in university context.
  • Project planning and management abilities.  
  • Ability to communicate very effectively in a wide range of contexts.  
  • Understand the essentials of how a program or project is budgeted and priced in the context of self-support higher education. 
  • The essentials of developing programs/events and service for target markets and taking market needs and demands into consideration when developing a program or service.   
  • Strong analytical and creative problem solving skills.
  • Exemplary academic and/or professional qualifications in one of the disciplines in the School of Business & Communication
  • Effective communication and public relations skills with the ability to forge productive links with other external constituencies, including area business partners and corporations
  • Demonstrated budget and fiscal management experience
  • evidence of strategic planning leadership and the ability to effectively implement strategic plans
    An ability to raise financial resources and build the financial infrastructure of the School
  • An ability to engage with and foster relationships with industry and community partners
  • A strong commitment to community engagement for the purpose of linking students, faculty, and friends with community, regional and global leaders who know, understand and support the School of Business & Communication.
  • An ability to develop innovative, market-driven programs in business and communication
  • Entrepreneurial approach that can generate creative solutions for a resource-limited environment

Preferred Experience

  • Academic administrative experience as a dean, chair or program manager
  • Experience with academic program review, assessment, and accreditation
  • Experience with new academic program/track development
  • Experience generating new revenues with non-degree credentials and/or new offerings
  • Experience with recruitment pathways for traditional and non-traditional student demographics and transfers
  • Experience with online learning and course/program delivery strategy
  • Successful fundraising experience
  • Experience networking among diverse constituencies to effectively advance organizations
  • Experience with data-driven approaches to undergraduate and graduate retention, progression and graduation

Position Information

This position reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and is a key part of the leadership team.

Hours: This is a full time, exempt position. Forty hours per week (M-F) will be the general rule. However, depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required. Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and a varying schedule.

Type: Full-time, 12-month, Administrative Position
