The Undergraduate and Graduate Communications Design Departments in the School of Design at Pratt Institute invite applications for two full-time, tenure track positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin August 2020. We seek applicants with a broad vision of the future of design and the ability to articulate that vision. Housed together in the School of Design on Pratt's historic 25-acre campus in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, both departments are recognized leaders in the field and currently offer BFA in Communications Design, MFA in Communications Design and MS in Package Design degrees.

Successful candidates will demonstrate expertise in the practice, theory and history of communications design. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to curricular development and pedagogical innovation, as well as the ability to teach across a wide range of courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, all the while engaging current and emerging platforms, skills and literacies in contemporary communications design practice. Candidates are expected to model historical and critical perspectives on contemporary communications design, including issues surrounding globalism, sustainability, technological advancement, and equity and inclusion. Candidate's professional or scholarly focus may include a broad set of interests and applications within graphic design, illustration, package design and related disciplinary practices, including but not limited to: interaction/experiential design, creative coding, transdisciplinary design, speculative design, digital storytelling, networked communications and augmented/virtual reality.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to design education as well as a strong record of achievement that includes professional practice, contemporary scholarship and creative activity in the field of communications design. Successful candidates will work within and across both departments as well as collaborate with other disciplines within the institute.

The successful candidates will:
  • Teach required undergraduate and graduate communications design courses as well as electives in the candidate's area of expertise.
  • Maintain active and recognized professional practice, research/scholarship and creative activity.
  • Actively participate in departmental and institutional service, including committee work and academic support services including, but not limited to, curricular coordination and development, curricular assessment, supervision of student organizations, student advising and recruitment activities.
  • Embrace new forms of critically engaged practice and pedagogy and contribute to the development of a strong culture of design scholarship, research and innovation in the department.
  • Build interdisciplinary collaborations both inside and outside the School of Design with a focus on opportunities for collaboration between the undergraduate and graduate departments.


Qualifications

Education:

MFA or MDes or degree equivalent in communications design, visual communication, graphic design, interaction design, or related discipline.

Experience:

Required:
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching with a minimum of 3 years experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • 3-5 years of recognized, current professional practice and/or creative scholarship in the field of communication design or related discipline.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent collaborator with management and leadership skills: ability to meet deadlines and communicate effectively.
  • Understanding of historical and critical perspectives on contemporary communications design including issues surrounding globalism, sustainability, technological advancement, and equity and inclusion.
  • Expertise in a broad range of methodologies, concepts, techniques and technology related to contemporary communications design practice.

Preferred:
  • Demonstrated ability to work with other faculty and students on interdisciplinary/collaborative projects.
  • Experience in curricular design, coordination and development.
  • Dedication to the building of a community of scholars/educators.
  • Successful funding procurement and grant activity.

Salary and Rank are competitive and commensurate with education and experience.

Pratt Institute is a coeducational, private, professional college offering associate, bachelor and master's degree programs in art and design, architecture and library science. The Institute has been educating professionals for productive careers in artistic and technical fields since its founding on its present site in Brooklyn in 1887 by the industrialist and philanthropist Charles Pratt. Pratt is one of the largest undergraduate and graduate schools for art, design and architecture in the country and offers a wide range of cross discipline study options, dual degrees and major concentrations. The Institute's 25-acre campus contains twenty-four buildings, including landmark Romanesque and Renaissance Revival-style structures, clustered around spacious lawns and tree-canopied plazas. Sixteen buildings contain extensive studio, shop and technical facilities needed to support work in all media-from the traditional to the experimental. Five buildings are student residences. All have computer networking capacities and are Internet accessible. Computer labs, established with the most current equipment and the latest software, are available for instructional purposes and individual project use. Gallery space is extensive and the work of students, alumni, staff and other well-known artists is shown throughout the academic year. Pratt's Library, an historical landmark built in 1896, was the first fully automated academic library in the New York City area. Its art and architecture collection is excellent and contains approximately 208,000 volumes, 500 periodical and newspaper subscriptions, 66,000 slides, 190,000 pictures, 50,000 microforms, and 45,000 governmental documents.
