Departmental Overview

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, students, and friends of the University, raising public awareness about Berkeley, and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus's philanthropic advance strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. The Division handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, and more.

The Student Experience & Diversity (SED) Philanthropy program is designed to raise funds, and provide meaningful engagement opportunities for, alumni students, and friends contributing philanthropically to the holistic success of Berkeley students. The Student Experience & Diversity program raises funds in support of student aid, co-curricular activities, and equity and inclusion. The SED Program interfaces with a broad range of divisions on campus, with a focus on the priorities of the divisions of Equity & Inclusion, Undergraduate Education, and Student Affairs.

Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the Director of Development, develops and manages a comprehensive stewardship plan that encompasses annual programs and major gifts that are part of the Student Experience & Diversity portfolio.
  • Program will include a broad view of gift acknowledgement processes and messaging, scholarship reporting and donor/student engagement opportunities, as well as reporting to donors who support student experience programs.
  • Responsible for overseeing reporting to foundations and other donors.
  • Implementation requires close coordination with multiple internal collaborator's across campus with specific emphasis on engagement with UDAR Donor Gifts Services and Annual Programs, Financial Aid, programs within Equity & Inclusion, Undergraduate Education, and Student Affairs.
  • Maintains a focused portfolio of selected individual donors for ongoing stewardship.
  • Provides analysis and information of complex results or activities, and makes recommendations for program changes or development of new programs as required.
  • Participates in short and long-range strategic planning.
  • Develops strategies within existing policy guidelines and helps to inform new stewardship tools and policies.
  • Ensures that policies related to stewardship program fulfillment for the SED group are met.
  • Assists in detailed planning of fund development and annual solicitation programs.
  • Coordinates and oversees the work of support staff and/or other professionals.
  • Serves as a group lead in working with UDAR Donor and Gift Services in overseeing the fulfillment of acknowledgement letters and other mailing processes.

Required Qualifications
  • Thorough working knowledge and understanding of fundraising, donor relations and public relations concepts, principles, techniques, procedures and practices.
  • Outstanding written, oral and interpersonal communication skills and political acumen to establish and maintain good working relationships within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies
  • Advanced knowledge of all aspects of donor stewardship and demonstrated experience working with scholarship programs.
  • Thorough working knowledge of the campus, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure, or ability to learn.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera.
  • Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification/avoidance/resolution.
  • Thorough project management skills.
  • Skills to meet or exceed goals and objectives.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
