Description:

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for one clinical track faculty position in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging at the Assistant or Associate Professor academic rank. The University of Florida is ranked number 7 among public universities and sits in beautiful north central Florida (appropriately named the “Sunshine State"), an hour away from pristine beaches, and within 2 hours of the bustling cities of Jacksonville and Orlando.

For the clinical track position, the new faculty member’s primary duties (60% to 70%) will be in the daily clinical imaging section of the Diagnostic Imaging Services in the UF Veterinary Hospitals.  Responsibilities will include didactic teaching and clinical training of professional students, graduate students and residents.  The individual will participate in and support the teaching and service missions of Diagnostic Imaging in the Veterinary Medical Center.  Teaching and clinical responsibilities will be shared with other faculty radiologists.  Scholarly productivity is expected and can be accomplished through publication of clinical or educational research studies.

Equipment and caseload:  Approximately 15000 small animals/exotics and 1500 large animals are imaged annually. The beautiful, 100,000 square foot Small Animal Veterinary Hospital is a must see!  The Large Animal Hospital includes a dedicated Lameness and Imaging faculty and staff, with a new, state-of-the-art Lameness Arena. The service is completely digital, using Fuji Synapse RIS for scheduling and reporting, and Merge PACS for image storage and retrieval.  The large and freshly remodeled reading room houses 7 diagnostic imaging workstations equipped with 2-4 high-definition gray scale diagnostic imaging monitors per station.  In addition, 3 diagnostic imaging workstations are located in the Ultrasound suite and 2 diagnostic imaging workstations are located near MRI and the large animal radiographic quality control area for diagnostic review, reporting and consultation.

Small Animal Diagnostic Imaging equipment includes 4 digital radiographic suites, 3 of which have an overhead strut system for performing cross-table imaging, all equipped with Canon DR imaging plates, a radiographic suite in the Emergency Room, which also has an overhead strut system for performing cross-table imaging, and a Cannon DR imaging plate and a traditional, small animal radiographic suite in the Primary Care Service with a Sedecal DR imaging plate as well as a portable Sedecal DR unit with a Cannon DR imaging plate in the Small Animal OR.

The Ultrasound suite is expansive and newly remodeled, with 4 Ultrasound machines including a Phillips Epiq 5 ultrasound unit with strain elastography and  5 transducers including a linear transducer with 18 MHz imaging frequency, a Samsung RS85 ultrasound unit with strain and shear wave elastography, microvascular flow and CT fusion imaging, and a Samsung RS80A with Prestige, with nine transducers shared between the two Samsung machines, as well as a Phillips iU22 ultrasound unit with 4 transducers including a small intraoperative linear probe with 17 MHz imaging,

Large Animal Diagnostic Imaging equipment includes 2 digital radiographic suites with Canon DR imaging plates, one of which is wireless.

The hospital is fully equipped for advance imaging with a Toshiba Titan® 1.5 T 16 channel MR unit equipped for both small and large animal examinations; a 160 slice Toshiba Prime® CT equipped for both small and large animal examinations; an MiE Scintron IV nuclear scintigraphy unit; and a must see, state-of-the-art catheterization laboratory equipped with a Toshiba Infinix-i® single plane digital C-arm.

Current Faculty and Staff:  Currently our team consists of an energetic and innovative group of 6 board-certified radiologists (equating to 5 FTE), 7 radiology residents and 10 full time veterinary and human technologists, 4 veterinary assistants, and one full time administrative assistant that support the imaging services.  The radiology department is a team-oriented section that is excited about any further development of diagnostic imaging in collaboration with the talents, experience and ideas of the new faculty member.  The faculty, residents and staff are all in support of promoting and advancing the current diagnostic imaging knowledge base. Residents are provided teleradiology support for all after-hours radiographic interpretation, and two residents, including one more experienced resident, are on call for after-hours Ultrasound examinations.

Collaborative opportunities:  The University of Florida McKnight Brain Institute houses multiple high field strength MR (3T, 4.7T, 7.0T and 11T; http://www.mbi.ufl.edu) units where collaborative research programs can be developed.  Other collaborative opportunities exist within the UF | Health Science Center (Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and Applied Health Sciences), that is located two blocks from the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Florida Museum of Natural History.
