Summary:

The Director of Academic Support, Health Professions will provide leadership for creating a comprehensive academic support program for Marian University’s graduate programs in the Health Professions, with a primary focus on the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM). The Director will partner with faculty and staff in providing a variety of support initiatives and services such as transition and development programs; intervention for at risk students; and tutoring and mentoring programs. In addition, the Director will work one-on-one with struggling and at-risk students to build individualized learning plans and strategies. The position will report to the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and will supervise the Graduate Learning Support Specialist(s).

Principal Accountabilities

Facilitate one-on-one and group cognitive skills development sessions with students.

Create and facilitate a system for identifying at-risk and academically struggling students.

Directly collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs in facilitating the building of individualized learning plans and strategies.

Oversee all aspects of new and continuing student orientation activities for the health professions.

Assess academic support programs and their achievement of identified key outcomes.

Provide appropriate referrals to mental health counseling services as well as learning disorder and disability assessment when needed.

Develop and manage outreach and intervention programs for student who have failed medical licensing exams or are at risk for failure.

Directly collaborate with the Director of Graduate Medical Education in an effort to co-deliver resources and content to students related to academic achievement and career exploration.

Supervise the Graduate Learning Support Specialist(s).

Additional Responsibilities include the following.Other duties may be assigned.

Consult regularly with faculty from each academic program and department to share information about struggling students and to develop academic support experiences that promote student success.

Provide one-on-one academic counseling for students in the areas of study skills, test-taking strategies, licensing exam preparation, anxiety reduction, long-term recall, priority management and others.

Provide group academic support sessions and workshops as needed.

Serve as the Student Affairs representative on the Student Progress and Academic Promotion Committee.

Provide ongoing workshops, presentations, and correspondence regarding preparation for standardized examinations (ex. COMLEX, USMLE, MCAT).

Identify and oversee the implementation of learning assessment instruments.

Coordinate the faculty mentor program inclusive of trainings and resources.

Serve as integral member of student success teams or committees in designing support interventions for struggling or at-risk students.

Coordinate peer tutoring for graduate programs in Health Professions.

Maintain accurate records of individuals and groups utilizing Academic Support Services. Utilize these records to generate reports that have value to institutional management and planning.

Conduct a comprehensive review of all programs and services currently provided and determine appropriate key learning outcomes or performance indicators.

Oversee department budget for all programs and services.

Requirements:

Master's degree required in psychology, counseling, education or related field

Previous experience in a counseling, academic support or tutoring setting within an institution of higher education desired.

Previous experience working with graduate and professional students desired.

Proficient with the administration and evaluation of various types of learning assessment tools.

Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Computer skills to include a working knowledge of database management and reporting.

Ability to function independently as well as part of a team.

Understanding of Student Affairs/Student Development philosophy and how it applies to Academic Support Services.

Communicate effectively with internal and external groups.

Maintain confidentiality and discretion in dealing with sensitive information.
