General Description / Primary Purpose

The University of North Florida is home to one of the most recognized performance-based music programs in the country. Comprised of dedicated faculty members who are recognized artist/practitioners in their fields, the School of Music offers a stimulating and personal atmosphere in which students and faculty collaborate together to create meaningful and relevant performance experiences for the community at large.

The School of Music is a limited access program offering Bachelor of Music (B.M.) degrees in Performance with concentrations in Voice, Piano, Piano Pedagogy, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Strings, Music Technology and Production, a B.M. in Jazz Studies, and a B.M. in Education. Master of Music degrees in Conducting, Voice, Education, Piano, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion and Jazz Studies are also offered.

Since its beginnings in 1972, the school’s limited access status has allowed for a more personal rapport between teacher and student while upholding the highest standards of musical excellence. The countless awards and endorsements that the School of Music has received is testament to the caliber of the UNF School of Music. The School of Music is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

Essential Duties

Job Function

Primary responsibilities include teaching a studio of B.M., B.M.E., and M.M. voice students and directing/staging opera and opera scenes. The successful applicant will also engage in recruitment, retention, and fundraising initiatives on and off campus in collaboration with colleague, participate in faculty governance, and be involved with the campus community.

At a minimum, applicants must have earned a doctorate degree at the time of appointment, possess varied artist-level performing skills, and provide evidence of successful teaching. It is preferred that candidates have college teaching experience, a significant experience directing opera productions and teaching applied voice, be an exceptional singer-director who demonstrates the capacity to provide vision and imagination for the UNF vocal arts department, especially in the context of the developing nature of a career in music. Candidates demonstrating commitment to entrepreneurship and community outreach will receive strong consideration. Preference for a Bass/Baritone/Bass-Baritone.
