Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies/Science

(posted 07/31/19)

The Environmental Studies program at Hollins University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies/Science beginning July 1, 2020.

The Hollins Environmental Studies program is an interdisciplinary program supported by a broad array of faculty across many disciplines, and offers a B.S. in Environmental Science and a B.A. in Environmental Studies.

The position carries a teaching load of six courses (or equivalent) per year. Other duties include maintaining scholarly activity in the form of publications and presentations, developing curriculum, advising students, participating in department and university service, and engaging in faculty/student research. The ideal candidate will be broadly trained in environmental/sustainability science, and will be expected to offer introductory undergraduate courses in sustainability and environmental policy, as well as upper-level courses in areas of expertise. Individuals with expertise in sustainability systems, water, energy and/or materials science, and/or those that can integrate sustainability science and policy are particularly encouraged to apply. In addition, candidates should be able to develop a research program that can involve undergraduates, ideally with a focus on sustainability.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand by time of the appointment, a strong commitment to teaching at a liberal arts institution, evidence of active scholarship, and an interest in innovation and collaboration. Candidates with postdoctoral experience and/or significant teaching experience are preferred. Hollins University is committed to the core values of diversity and inclusion. Applications are sought from members of underrepresented populations and those who have demonstrated success working with diverse populations. Candidates are encouraged to comment, either in their cover letter or in a separate statement, on how their writing, research, teaching, and/or service experience will enhance the institution’s efforts to support these values and an increasingly diverse student population.

Qualified candidates should send a cover letter of application, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, a research statement, graduate school transcript(s) (unofficial transcripts are acceptable), and three letters of reference to ESsearch@hollins.edu. Applications received by October 15, 2019 will receive full consideration, and the search will continue until the position is filled. Final candidates will be subject to a criminal history background check.
