Johnson County Community College is located in Overland Park, KS, the second largest city in the state of Kansas and part of the greater Kansas City Metro. The Kansas City Metro is known for its museums, restaurants, and music and art scenes. JCCC is similarly dedicated to creating and maintaining a rich cultural community, with an award-winning contemporary art museum and center for the performing arts located on campus.
JCCC is searching for a diverse pool of applicants to fill a part-time adjunct faculty position in the Foreign Languages department to teach Elementary German and Intermediate language courses. The Foreign Language Department offers courses in Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish and is part of the Communications Division. Many of our students are non-traditional, military veterans, immigrants, international and first-generation college students. JCCC serves a diverse student population and is dedicated to increasing its diversity.

The successful applicant for this job will teach the equivalent of 3-10 credit hours per semester in German. This person will perform other duties expected of adjunct faculty, to include collaborating and working successfully with other full-time faculty in the Foreign Language department and other duties as assigned. Teaching assignments could be day or evening courses, and and are subject to change as needed.
Additional responsibilities:

  • Provide extra and co-curricular opportunities for German language students
  • Participate in the planning and administration of all departmental initiatives
  • Participate in on-campus events promoting languages
  • Participate in required departmental training

  • One letter of recommendation from a colleague that addresses language, teaching and collaborative skills.

Required Skills
  • M.A. in German or an MA in a related discipline with at least 18 hours of graduate work in German as required by JCCC HLC criteria
  • Demonstrated ability to teach Elementary and Intermediate level German language courses
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Documented from ACTFL (OPI) of advanced, mid or higher in German

Preferred Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of using technology in the classroom
  • Demonstrated understanding of the climate of post-secondary institutions
  • Ability to teach Chinese, French, German Japanese or Spanish with HLC credentials
  • PhD in German

Required Experience

Minimum of two years teaching experience at the post-secondary level and/or four years of high school teaching experience

Preferred Experience

Demonstrated teaching experience of Chinese, French, German, Japanese or Spanish

Working at Johnson County Community College

With more than 34,000 students enrolled in credit and continuing education classes each semester, Johnson County Community College is the state's third largest institution of higher education and the largest of its 19 community colleges.

JCCC offers a full range of undergraduate credit courses that form the first two years of most college curricula. The college has more than 100 transfer agreements with area colleges and universities that ensure admittance to specific programs such as business, engineering and education. JCCC students are able to begin their first two years of a four-year degree program here and complete that degree on schedule.

In addition, more than 50 one- and two-year career and certificate programs prepare students to enter the job market in high-employment fields. The college maintains extensive student support services such as computer labs, math labs, a writing center and a learning center.

JCCC’s continuing education program is the largest, most comprehensive in the Kansas City area. Through the Center for Business and Technology, participants can take courses in management and computer application or seminars and workshops that lead to professional certification and licensure. Personal enrichment classes, on topics ranging from gardening to money management, are also offered, while nationally and internationally performing and visual artists appear in the performance spaces and Gallery of Art in JCCC’s Carlsen Center.

The campus, centrally located in the county on 234 acres, opened in 1972. There are 18 major buildings on campus. Currently under construction are the Regnier Center and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.

JCCC’s full-time faculty and staff numbers about 875. Another 1,800 people work as adjunct faculty or part-time staff. Most faculty members have master’s degrees, and many have or are earning doctorates.

JCCC returns about $2.70 to the community for every tax dollar it collects. The college's total tangible economic impact on the community is more than $182 million annually.
