The Department of Communication Studies at Metropolitan State University of Denver invites candidates to apply for a tenure-track position in rhetoric and debate. Qualified candidates will be able to make contributions to the department’s rhetoric and public culture emphasis area and to take leadership of departmental efforts to revitalize MSU Denver’s public-oriented debate program.

Our department is dedicated to cultivating effective, ethical, and professional communicators. We seek to help people develop in their capacity as communicators in order to flourish in their personal, professional, and public lives. The department consists of thirteen full-time faculty members, two administrative assistants, and a professional advisor serving a growing body of 250 majors and the vast majority of students on campus through the oral communication general studies requirement.

Our new colleague will help us to grow the rhetoric and public culture concentration, one of two specified emphasis areas in our revised communication studies curriculum. We are particularly interested in candidates who can teach rhetorical theory, argumentation, and public deliberation. Preference will be given to candidates with experience and/or ability to teach online as the department seeks to expand its online course offerings.

The successful candidate will also be able to take over leadership in restarting our debate program as a part of the department’s strategic initiative to create a robust “Dialogue and Debate” program focused on developing and promoting conversational and advocacy skills critical for revitalizing civil society. The successful candidate will demonstrate the vision and ability to develop a public-oriented debate program including competitive intercollegiate debates, intramural and exhibition debates on campus, and community outreach.
