Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of the Fine Arts Center develops and implements an arts programming vision. The Director of Programming plans to produce, promote and present high quality diverse arts, culture and educational events that enhance student life and bring recognition to the Fine Arts Center (FAC) and the University of Massachusetts (UMass) as a premier center for arts and culture. Audiences include K-12; college students, faculty and staff; and the general public.

Essential Functions

  • Envisions and plans innovative programs that support the mission of the Fine Arts Center’s performing arts series and allows the organization to achieve its goals in artistic excellence, education and community engagement, and financial stability.
  • Serves as a Fine Arts Center’s public spokesperson at donor and campus community-related activities.
  • Negotiates and contracts with performing artists for FAC events within budget guidelines and with an eye toward securing bold and exciting program options that enhance student life and bring recognition to the FAC and UMass as a center for arts and culture.
  • Exercises responsibility for the Five College performing arts partnership, working in conjunction with the Director of Administration and Finance regarding the financial management of the program.
  • Develops the programming budget, including artists’ fees and supporting costs, and administers and controls expenditures of budgeted funds, working closely with the Director of Administration and Finance.
  • Plans and implements marketing strategies for FAC events with the Director of Marketing, with a goal of growing student audiences.
  • Plans and implements educational residencies in cooperation with the Director of Education and Engagement, faculty and community organizations.
  • Secures funding for FAC events from federal, state, public and private organizations and regional sources and works with Director of Development in providing opportunities for donor cultivation and engagement through access to artists and programming ideas.
  • Works to build collaborations with other FAC curators, UMass faculty, academic departments and community partners.
  • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with performing artists and agents.
  • Plan, coordinates and strategizes all aspects of the programming department including scheduling, contracting, negotiating, researching, viewing potential artists and proposal writing.
  • Supervises, motivates and inspires all levels of staff, welcoming their ideas and encouraging teamwork. Provides leadership and direction to direct reports; ensures accurate implementation of strategies; coaches staff to successfully accomplish established goals.
  • Oversees work processes and output to ensure quality standards are met and continued improvement is achieved.
  • Supervises selection of outside vendors as necessary.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master's Degree.
  • Five to ten years of progressive experience in performing arts programming.
  • Demonstrated mastery across a broad spectrum of arts disciplines in order to make informed curatorial decisions for arts programming.
  • Demonstrated foundation in arts theory, analysis and critical evaluation to select a viable performing arts series.
  • Wide ranging knowledge of the performing arts, fine arts publicity and promotion.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively, and create and maintain harmonious relationships with a diverse population of staff, faculty, students, and off-campus constituents.
  • Independent initiative. Must have the ability to stay on task and work productively with a minimum amount of supervision or guidance.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write concisely, express thoughts clearly, and develop ideas in a logical sequence.

  • Master's degree in an arts related, performing arts or equivalent field.
  • Experience in a higher education environment.

    Typical office environment activity.

    Work Schedule

  • Monday-Friday, 40 hours/week with occasional evenings and/or weekends.
  • Expected to work evening performances related to FAC events.
