JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY:

The Instructional Designer is part of the BTS Change Management team and reports to the Training Program Manager at Stanford's new Redwood City Campus. The Instructional Designer will design learning programs that enable impacted OOD and SAA staff to successfully migrate to new systems and adopt new business processes and policies. Will be required to design, develop and deliver innovative and engaging courses (primarily for online delivery) that enable learners to confidently and competently use new tools and processes to do their jobs.

The Instructional Designer is part of the Change Management team in the Business Technology Services group (BTS). BTS serves Stanford's Office of Development and Stanford Alumni Association and works from Stanford's new Redwood City campus.
CORE DUTIES*:
  • Draft storyboards, scripts, and prototypes of training content and proactively shepherd drafts through appropriate reviews, updates and approvals. When necessary, create customized versions of scripts for different target audiences.
  • With minimal technical supervision, use TechSmith Camtasia (or equivalent) and our LMS (Learning Management System), Lessonly, to design and develop accurate, engaging and creative online / on demand and blended courses (including practice opportunities, assessments, and supplementary materials).
  • Convert existing documentation and training materials into engaging and effective online courses.
  • Support the administration of Lessonly (our LMS), for both user and content management. Also, provide LMS user training and support.
  • Develop and follow a continuous improvement process for training content including an evaluation methodology and updates to content as needed.
  • Share best practices through cross campus collaboration and instructional design community.
  • Consistently complete projects by agreed upon deadlines.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Technical Skills:
    • Demonstrated ability to develop media-rich, engaging, and high-impact learning solutions.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in applying instructional design theory, models, and technical training best practices.
    • Experience making e-learning exciting, fun and social.
    • Experience using industry standard learning technologies and tools, such as Learning Management System (LMS) and Content Management System (CMS) platforms, project management tools, eLearning authoring tools (preferably TechSmith Camtasia), digital graphics media, and audio and video production tools to create impactful courses.
    • Demonstrated understanding of andragogy and other principles of adult learning theory and how it is put into practice in professional training.
    • Willing to record course scripts in own voice and able to do so in a confident and engaging manner.
    • Highly proficient in collaborative business tools such as the Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, etc.)
  • Business Acumen:
    • Demonstrated ability to consult and work collaboratively with business partners, subject matter experts, technical resources, vendor partners, and business partners and diverse groups and individuals at any and all levels of an organization.
    • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the creation of an environment that is service oriented, supportive, engaging and effective.
    • Demonstrated excellence in client service skills and ability to learn business concepts quickly.
    • Excellent project management skills and demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.
    • Outstanding writing, editing, critical reasoning, interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate complex concepts concisely and clearly and to convert technical or complex information and concepts into easily understandable text and illustrations.
    • Demonstrated ability to use qualitative and quantitative data to evaluate the effectiveness of learning materials and to improve materials as needed.

INTRODUCTION TO ADAPT (Alumni and Development Applications Platform Transition):

ADAPT is a multi-year program that will migrate Stanford's 20-year old PostGrads database and all its associated systems and processes (e.g., gift-processing, web presence, constituent management, event management, etc.) to a Salesforce platform or inter-related systems. This project paves the way for OOD, Stanford Alumni Association (SAA), and their campus partners to better serve, steward, and digitally engage the university's donors and alumni.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a computer; use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally reach/work above shoulders, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, write by hand, sort/file paperwork.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, operate foot and/or hand controls.
