Salary:
Anticipating Hiring Rate: $55 per hour

This part-time, hourly, intermittent appointment is temporary and expected to end on or before February 28, 2020. This appointment will remain a temporary position, but may be extended depending upon the needs of the Student Health and Counseling Center.

Overview:
The Nurse Practitioner's primary purpose is to provide primary health care, to the students of California State University, Fresno. This position reports administratively to the Director of the Student Health Center, and reports operationally to the Medical Chief of Staff.

Position Summary:
Major Duties of the job include:
  • Perform complete annual GYN examinations that include, but are not limited to, pap exams, pelvic and breast exams, prescribing birth control medication and devices, and provide education for health maintenance as it pertains to women's health concerns.
  • Diagnose sexually transmitted diseases and gynecologic disease/problems with the ability to distinguish between normal, normal variance and abnormal findings based on evaluation of medical history and physical examination. Selection of appropriate laboratory tests and radiologic test as needed. Interpret test results to assess the patient's condition and/or medical problems. Provide treatment based on exam, history and test results.
  • Diagnose and treat common illnesses and injuries, distinguish between normal, normal variance and abnormal findings based upon evaluation of the medical history and physical examination. Selection of laboratory tests and x-rays when needed. Interpret test and study results.
  • Consult with and refer students to physicians for complicated health problems. Collaborate with other health care professionals in providing care and treatment such as physical therapy, health education and nutrition.
  • Prescribe medication to patients, provided the supervising physician has delegated the authority to do so.
  • Work as a member of the health care team, as well as filling in the role of registered nurse, and assisting physicians and LVN's as patient flow requires.
  • Serve as a resource to health center staff/committees.

    Secondary Duties of the job include:
  • Understand, support and comply with the mission, vision, goals, policies and procedures of the UHPS, the campus and the California State University system.
  • Serve as a resource to health center staff/committees.
  • Serve on various UHPS committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge to work as a Nurse Practitioner including, but not limited to, a comprehensive knowledge of advanced nursing and primary care principles, methods and procedures
  • A thorough knowledge of medical theories, practices and protocols relative to the scope of practice
  • A thorough knowledge of subject areas [such as growth and development, pathophysiology, psychosocial assessment, pharmacology, nutrition, disease management, and the principles of health maintenance]
  • A thorough knowledge of the applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to practice as a Nurse Practitioner
  • General knowledge of effective supervisory principles and practices, if assigned lead work direction

    Ability to:
  • Work independently in assigned areas of practice established by the supervising physician; demonstrate clinical competence in eliciting patient histories, conducting examinations, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, assessing patient needs and making appropriate referrals
  • Use clinical techniques and diagnostic tools
  • Interpret laboratory and other study results
  • Keep current with developments in the medical field pertinent to the incumbent's scope of practice
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other health center staff
  • Be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients
  • Work with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing

    Education and Experience:
  • Nurse Practitioners must possess an academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university based Nurse Practitioner program or possess equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and must possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty.

    Licensing and Certification Requirements
  • Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid California license as a Registered Nurse and a BRN Certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing. National certification is preferred, but not required. In addition the incumbent must possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate and maintain a valid DEA number and certificate.

    Preferred Skills:
  • Two or more years of experience as a nurse practitioner.
  • Experience as a nurse practitioner in an ambulatory health care setting.
  • Experience as a nurse practitioner providing sexual health and family planning services.
  • Experience on a college/university campus.
  • Experience working with a range of professional categories such as physicians, other nurse practitioners, registered nurses, psychiatrists, or mental health professionals.
  • Preference will be given to those with additional skills or certification to perform special procedures, such as IUC Insertion/removal, Implanon/Nexplanon insertion and removal, colposcopy, suturing, etc.
  • Possess a working knowledge of Electronic Medical Record Systems (EMR).
  • National certification is preferred, but not required.
