Job Id: 442 # of Openings: 1 ACADEMIC AFFAIRS – DEAN OF LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES SummaryThe Dean of the Library reports to the Provost and oversees the Buswell Memorial Library, College Archives, Special Collections, the Marion E. Wade Center, Wheaton College Billy Graham Center Archives, the Billy Graham Museum, and supervises approximately 35 faculty and staff. This is an administrative position with faculty rank and The Dean of the Library is a member of the Senior Academic Leadership team. Responsibilities & Duties
- Oversee approximately 35 faculty and staff with direct supervision of the Director of the Billy Graham Center Archives, the Director of the Marion E. Wade Center, the Library Operations Manager, and nine library faculty members.
- Advocate for library and archival needs, budget, and strategy; effectively allocate and manage financial and other resources, including budgetary requests and appropriate allocation of academic resources to achieve the mission and goals of the division and of the College.
- Provide strategic guidance for the development of library and archival print and digital collections, integrating traditional and new forms of publication, vendor platforms and services, archival practices, preservation, and digitization.
- Serve as an external champion and spokesperson for the Library and archives. Participate in fundraising efforts for library and archival facilities and resources. Represent the College to various external consortia and associations.
- In collaboration with library faculty and staff, oversee the development and management of the library and archival technological environment, identify information needs, and integrate new technologies to support the teaching and learning mission of the College.
- In partnership with the faculty, advocate for information-literacy instruction embedded in the general education curriculum (Christ at the Core) and for similar instruction throughout undergraduate and graduate programing, including support of diversity and global emphases, that enables an exceptional scholarly community.
- Facilitate excellence among the library faculty in librarianship, scholarship, spiritual formation, integration of Christian faith and learning, and institutional citizenship.
- Recruit new faculty candidates and recommend to the Provost qualified faculty for divisional appointment, including review processes mandated for faculty and staff by College policy.
- Serve on the Provost’s Senior Academic Leadership Team and contribute to the development and maintenance of College-wide and divisional policies and programs.
- Collaborate with various campus committees, units, faculty, and administrators to advance teaching, learning, and research.
- Actively participate, conduct scholarship and contribute leadership to the academic library/archival profession.
- Oversee copyright compliance for the campus community.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- A master’s degree in library, archival, or information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association or archival or foreign equivalent. An additional PhD in an academic discipline is desirable.
- Demonstrated success in leadership and administration of a large academic library and archives with the visionary, relational, and entrepreneurial gifts that enable these units to thrive in a continually changing environment.
- In-depth understanding of academic library and archival resources and services; well-informed and reflective about ongoing developments in academic libraries and archives, higher education, academic technology, and related spheres.
- Models a personal and living evangelical Protestant faith that is consistent with Wheaton College’s theological distinctiveness as expressed in its Statement of Faith and Community Covenant.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills with a track record in representing a library to internal and external constituents.
- History of professional development of faculty and staff.
- Commitment to the academic success of faculty and students in a Christ-Centered liberal-arts college setting and graduate school. Demonstrated understanding of the academic research process, resources, and the needs of faculty and students and broad academic interests.
