DESCRIPTION

Palmer Lab (palmerlab.org) is performing research in behavioral genetics in mice, rats and humans.

The primary focus area of this position is within the Center for Genetic Studies on Drug Abuse in Outbred Rats (ratgenes.org). The main responsibility is to assist in performing sequence analysis and genotyping. This includes executing established pipelines using Bash scripting and software such as PLINK, GCTA, STITCH and IMPUTE2; performing routine quality control for data inputs and analysis outputs, assisting with data organization and backup.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Bachelor's Degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • Basic knowledge of several areas of IT: Linux, Windows, High Performance Computing, cloud technologies such as Amazon EC2.

  • Basic knowledge relating to the design and development of software. Linux-based workflow development, including Bash scripting. Experience in developing multi-step analysis pipelines/workflows using scripting languages.

  • Proven ability to install software and troubleshoot basic problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Basic understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.

  • Basic understanding of data management operations and database administration.

  • Demonstrated experience in handling big data sets.

  • Demonstrated experience in programming languages, including R/Python.

  • Basic knowledge of computer security best practices and policies. Ability to put knowledge into practice.

  • Demonstrated ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.

  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

  • Solid interpersonal skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience or academic courses in molecular biology, genetics, or computation biology.
  • Experience in using software revision control systems (e.g. GIT).
