The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure-track position in sociocultural anthropology at the assistant professor level, beginning on 1 September 2020. The department seeks a candidate whose work complements the existing strengths of the department and who can make contributions to our undergraduate major in anthropology, our concentration in Global Health and Migration, and our Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies degree. We encourage applications from individuals with expertise in health, migration, the theoretical framing of borders, and community-engaged scholarship. The successful candidate will advance these areas while enlarging our departmental presence in the UTRGV Brownsville campus which, together with the Edinburg campus, hosts the Department of Anthropology. Preference will also be given to candidates who can expand students’ involvement in research and who will advance the bilingual, bicultural, biliterate mission of UTRGV. We are very interested in individuals with the potential to teach core courses, and possibly upper-division courses, in Spanish. Applicants should have an active program of research and scholarly publications, documented classroom excellence with innovative course delivery, and demonstrated potential for funded research. This position’s primary location will be the Brownsville campus of UTRGV. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Minimum Qualifications

1) Ph.D. in Anthropology or closely related field (18 credit hours or more of graduate level course work in Anthropology) with degree conferred by 1 September 2020. 2) an active program of research and scholarly publications. 3) demonstrated potential for teaching excellence.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates who have the potential to teach core courses, and possibly upper-division courses, in Spanish. Experience with online teaching is a plus.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.

All UTRGV employees are required to have a criminal background check (CBC). CBCs will be conducted for all candidates invited for an on-campus interview.
