DIVISION NAME

Worcester Polytechnic Institute - WPI

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and the Architectural Engineering Program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level in the broad area of the built environment and smart infrastructure for climate adaptation.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The position requires an earned doctorate in Civil or Architectural Engineering or a related field. A successful candidate will be required to develop an externally-funded research program aligned with the department’s strategic vision, which includes an emphasis on design, construction, and operation of buildings and built environments in the context of changing climate and coupled energy/water/food/climate grand challenges. The ability to apply forefront tools to this problem, including (but not limited to) data science and analytics, robotics, Smart World and systems engineering, artificial intelligence, and additive manufacturing, is preferred. There are many opportunities at WPI to develop research collaborations with Data Science, Robotics Engineering, Materials Science, and other programs.

The successful candidate will be expected to mentor graduate students and postdocs, advise students and student projects, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in CEE, develop new courses in their area of expertise, and effectively serve the profession and the institution. Candidates must be able to contribute to the department teaching mission in civil and architectural engineering, broadly defined.

WPI was ranked first in the nation in the category of “The Top Faculties; Schools that do the Best in Combining Scholarly Research with Classroom Instruction” by the Wall Street Journal. WPI is consistently ranked among the top national universities, and in the top 50 most innovative universities, by US News and World Report. WPI is known for its project-based curriculum, affording students the opportunity to witness and help solve problems all over the world. The university has begun a $12 million renovation of the department’s current building, and has broken ground on a new academic building that will provide additional space for Smart World/Smart Infrastructure including advanced Architectural Engineering. Worcester is the second largest city in New England and a growing center of scientific and technological innovation (housing nine colleges and universities) located about one hour west of Boston.

WPI’s reputation as a rigorous and innovative university rests on the shoulders of its faculty. A highly selective, private technological university and one of the nation’s first, WPI believes that when great minds work together, great advances follow. At WPI the boundaries to multidisciplinary collaboration are low. Faculty members, students, and other partners work collaboratively on the real-world projects and purposeful research that are hallmarks of the WPI experience. Our department and institute are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and respected; a place where every student, faculty and staff member can be themselves, irrespective of their race, class, gender, or sexual orientation, so that they can study, live, and work comfortably, to reach their full potential, and make meaningful contributions in order to meet departmental and institutional goals.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and should therefore be submitted early but in any case no later than Jan. 1 2020. We expect the position to be filled in time for a start in August 2020. Interested candidates should submit an application consisting of the following documents.

Required Documents

Documents should be combined into a single pdf file that should be submitted through WPI’s online application platform as an attachment.

1) Cover letter addressing the alignment between the department’s and candidate’s interests and vision
