Position Summary

The Learning Innovation Financial Analyst compiles, analyzes and reports on the financial performance for Duke Learning Innovation (DLI) departments.

Responsibilities

Budget Planning and Management
  • Analyzes monthly financial statements to determine proper charging of operating revenues and expenditures in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Regularly prepares income statements using standard report formats and provides interpretations of results; monitors and reports on financial performance of individual departments and DLI as a whole; recommends corrective actions based on analysis.
  • Assists managers in forecasting by providing historical information. Works with DLI Director and Associate Directors to prepare annual budget.
  • Assists with mid-year variance and year-end closing activities. Makes recommendations to improve financial systems and processes; performs in-house audits of operating units; analyzes deficiencies and reports to Director.
  • Develops annual and five-year capital replacement analyses; monitors capital plans and advises of compliance or changes; in conjunction with the Director, recommends procurement of equipment and facilities instrumental to the performance of all operations.
  • In collaboration with Library Business Services, develops and obtains approval for costing rates for services.
  • Assists with development of new business proposals including budget preparations, project specifications, capital investments, pricing structures and marketing strategies.

Financial Services

  • Serves as administrator for online education revenue streams; Manages accounting and processing of royalties, stipends and other payments and related reports to Duke faculty, schools and Learning Innovation partners
  • Processes, scans and posts various financial transactions, including accounts payable (AP) check requests, purchase orders (POs), miscellaneous reimbursements and other financial documents, as appropriate.
  • Maintains interface with departmental and University personnel to obtain and provide information to verify or support financial records and ensure compliance with established University policies and procedures; prepares correspondence and answer inquiries regarding accounting information as required
  • Prepares monthly general and standard journal entries, account reconciliations for assigned departments and cost objects; investigates and resolves variances; prepares cost reports and various other accounting statements and reports; provide interpretation of results as appropriate.
  • Provides financial administrative support for grants from the development of proposals through stewardship and reporting of the awards.

Administrative Support

  • Serves as backup to DLI staff and the DLI Staff Assistant with the coordination of special events, meetings and workshops hosted by the division - especially as it relates to the budget (space rentals; catering coordination, etc)
  • Serves as back up corporate card administrator for DLI.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Departmental Preferences:

MBA, MPA, or relevant advanced degree; Research Cost Compliance (RCC) certificate.

hree years of experience in managerial accounting; experience and an understanding of the Duke University Accounting System and Payroll System; proficient use of SAP R/3; prior experience managing the business activities for an academic unit; prior grants management experience.

Salary and Benefits

Salary dependent on qualifications and experience. Comprehensive benefits package includes 15 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Economics or a related business field.

Experience

Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B. Duke, created the family philanthropic foundation, The Duke Endowment, which provided for the expansion of Trinity College into Duke University.Duke Campus

As a result of the Duke gift, Trinity underwent both physical and academic expansion. The original Durham campus became known as East Campus when it was rebuilt in stately Georgian architecture. West Campus, Gothic in style and dominated by the soaring 210-foot tower of Duke Chapel, opened in 1930. East Campus served as home of the Woman's College of Duke University until 1972, when the men's and women's undergraduate colleges merged. Both men and women undergraduates now enroll in either the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences or the Pratt School of Engineering. In 1995, East Campus became the home for all first-year students.
