Departmental Overview
Facilities Services works to maintain a campus built environment that is conducive to teaching, learning and research. We strive to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the campus community.
Engineering and Technical Services helps develop the vision, strategy, incentives, and initiatives that will align operations, planning and design processes, and resource management with the principles of sustainability. Engineering and Technical Services consists of: Engineering Services, Energy Office, Strategic Energy Program, Energy Management, Fire Prevention Services, Facilities Preventive Maintenance.
The Energy Engineer is responsible for the Facilities Services programs relating to sustainability in particular to conservation of energy & water and utilities metering by working with Construction & Designs Energy Efficiency Partnership Program Manager on major projects, with other C&D Project Managers and various campus Building Managers & Coordinators on smaller to medium scale projects, and with internal entities as CalCAP, CACS & CALGet, Budget Office, and external entities as PG&E and UC Office of the President. Current financial magnitude of the projects the position is involved is as high as $4 to $5 million per program.
Responsibilities
-Reviews project applications to PG&E and UCOP for completeness in terms of data required, forms being complete, and timeliness of submission. Monitors the projects progress and provides periodic project update reports.
-Manages and responsible for campus-wide utilities metering program, network assessment and project management from installation, IT connection, software and hardware programming and system diagnosis.
-Meets with clients to help define project scope and program. Serves as technical & program advisor and assists management on all planning and related project matters, exercising independent judgment and initiative, and rendering opinions and making decisions having long-term effects on campus energy use. Reviews cost estimates, establishes project schedule and budget and reviews with clients. Formally establishes campus project, including working with other units, departments and the Office of the President (i.e., SMCP, Budget Office and Capital Project Units) to facilitate this effort and ensure funding is transferred.
-Works with architectural/engineering firms to develop project requirement, design criteria, and preparing energy savings calculations.
-Provides expertise in selection of design and construction professionals, in fee and contract negotiations, in project code compliance and regulations, in engineering and technical support, in campus policies procedures, and in guiding project development.
-Participates in data gathering, tracking and analyzing campus building energy usage. Also provides historical utility data & costs with analysis for buildings being considered for project study & implementation
-Develops and implements campus automated utility metering (electric, steam, gas and water) including meter installation, data server configuration, programming, and management. Works with outside vendor in set-up of programming & account and with FS shops and contractors in project implementation.
-Performs organizational, campus and administrative activities not directly relating to projects, including serving on campus committees representing department or unit.
-Participates in campus water conservation program including consumption metering and reporting, conservation outreach and water conservation project implementation.
