Job Details

The Department of Political Science is housed within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at DU. The department is composed of 10 faculty members (with additional visiting and adjunct faculty). The department offers the BA and minor in Political Science for undergraduate students, with approximately 200 majors and minors.

The Gender and Women's Studies Program, located in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS), offers undergraduate students a vibrant and rigorous course of study that cultivates a critical understanding of the role that gender plays in the construction of identities and the social and political organization of culture. It welcomes students who are eager to explore the connections between and among the many meanings that gender as well as race, sexuality, class and disability has in our lives, our scholarship, our communities, and our politics.

The Socio-Legal Studies program is an interdisciplinary program within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences which focuses on a broad education from various departments across campus, including sociology, political science, philosophy, environmental science, and media, film, and journalism studies. The program offers both a major and a minor, and it serves students from across the university.

General Summary

The Assistant to the Chair position provides general administrative support to the Department of Political Science. Duties include general office management, reception of visitors and answering of telephones, assisting faculty and students with course needs, major advising and managing mail services. Responsibility for managing various departmental processes also include tenure reviews, event planning, course scheduling and room requests.

The position also provides budget and hiring support to the Department of Political Science, the Gender and Women's Studies program, and the Socio-Legal Studies program. Duties include budget management, coordinating the processing of accounts payable/receivable transactions, processing payroll, and managing the hiring process for non-benefited positions. This position will work closely with the staff member providing non-budgetary administrative support to GWST/SLGS to coordinate on matters involving budgets and hiring.

The ideal candidate must be able to work independently under general direction, and must be able to provide excellent service to students, faculty, and staff under a variety of circumstances.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as procedure manuals, reports and other pertinent information.
  • Ability to interact with CAHSS faculty, employees, and students.
  • Ability to do basic math and accounting.
  • Ability to work with spreadsheets and learn finance/budget reports.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to be adaptable and flexible.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships.
  • Ability to take initiative in performing duties and work reliably without constant direct supervision
  • Solid computer skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Two (2) years of experience in an office support setting.
  • Experience and/or training in basic bookkeeping/accounting.
  • Experience with accounts payable and receivable.
  • Experience with website maintenance, social media, Word, and Excel in a professional context.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3-5 years in an office support setting, with experience in accounting/bookkeeping in a university environment.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Hourly Range:
The hourly range for the position is $19.78 - $20.50.
