The Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program, North Carolina (NC) State University is bringing some of the best and brightest minds to join NC State University’s interdisciplinary efforts to solve some of the globe’s most significant problems. Guided by a strong strategic plan and an aggressive vision, the cluster hiring program is adding new faculty members in select fields to add more breadth and depth to NC State’s already-strong efforts. The Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program marks a major initiative of the university’s strategic plan, “The Pathway to the Future.” We invite you to explore the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program and this cluster at https://facultyclusters.ncsu.edu/

NC State University provides a dynamic environment for research, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration across disciplines. Our location in the Research Triangle provides rich opportunities for interactions with industry, research organizations, other universities, and government agencies.

The Cluster in Global Environmental Change and Human Well-being focuses on understanding, confronting, and overcoming the challenges that global environmental change will pose for environmental health and human well-being. Our initiative provides leadership to bridge research programs across NC State’s colleges and will greatly increase our visibility in the field of global environmental change. In addition to building on biological, social, and physical sciences, our cluster capitalizes on momentum generated by two initiatives at NC State: (1) the USGS Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (https://secasc.ncsu.edu/), which invests in research and graduate training, and (1) the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (https://naturalsciences.org/research-collections), which offers opportunities for collaboration and public outreach on global change.

Essential Job Duties

As part of the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program, NC State University seeks applications and nominations for an Assistant Professor in Global Change Biology. While our goal is to hire at the Assistant level, applications and nominations for Associate and Full Professors will also be considered in exceptional cases.

Many of the greatest challenges to humanity in this century relate to the effects of global environmental changes, including climate change, land-use change, disease, and biodiversity loss. Addressing these challenges requires interdisciplinary research and education on the effects of a changing climate on ecosystem processes and services and feedbacks between ecological and human health at relevant spatial scales. We are especially interested in candidates with strong quantitative skills as well as candidates with demonstrated experience in research across ecology, economics, and policy for the quantification of ecosystem services under a changing climate.

This position is part of a cluster hire in Global Environmental Change and Human Well-being (https://facultyclusters.ncsu.edu/clusters/global-environmental-change-and-human-well-being/). Opportunities for collaboration exist across departments and colleges as well as with the USGS Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, the Office of Public Science, the Cluster of Public Science, the Cluster in Geospatial Analytics, and the Cluster in Emerging Plant Disease and Global Food Security. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vigorous, extramurally funded research program that enhances existing strengths and builds additional capacity in ecology and climate change biology. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and/or graduate courses in disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas related to climate change.

    NC State: Think and Do

NC State was founded with a purpose: to create economic, societal and intellectual prosperity for the people of North Carolina and the country. We began as a land-grant institution teaching the agricultural and mechanical arts. Today, we're a pre-eminent research enterprise with 12 colleges excelling in all major academic fields.

NC State studentsOur 34,000 high-performing students take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in the real world by conducting research, working in internships and co-ops, and performing acts of world-changing service. That experiential education ensures that they leave here ready to lead the workforce. NC State's 13:1 student-faculty ratio is one of the reasons why we're the best college for your money in North Carolina (Money) and the No. 5 best value among public universities nationally (U.S. News & World Report).

    Overcoming Challenges, Improving Lives

NC State is one of only two universities in the nation leading two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers — one developing wearable, self-powered health monitors, and the other researching smart-grid technology. We’re also leading interdisciplinary efforts to curb nuclear proliferation, help farmers confront climate change and build a new American manufacturing sector.

Our research doesn't just get published in a journal or sit on a shelf; it makes an impact. NC State is No. 6 nationwide in commercialization agreements based on university research, and we're No. 2 among universities without a medical school. Our Cooperative Extension Service provides research-based information to citizens in all 100 North Carolina counties. In addition, our industrial extension unit — Industry Expansion Solutions — has created an economic benefit for the state's manufacturers averaging $149 million per year since 2005.

Bright Minds Creating a Bold Future

NC State’s 9,000 faculty and staff are world leaders in their fields, bridging the divides between academic disciplines and training high-caliber students to meet tomorrow’s challenges. NC State students won two Goldwater scholarships, five Fulbright scholarships, one Churchill scholarship and a record-breaking 25 National Science Foundation graduate research fellowships in the 2016-2017 academic year. In addition, 25 faculty are members of the National Academies.
