The Department of Physics at William & Mary seeks applications for the Virginia Micro-Electronics Consortium (VMEC) chaired professorship in experimental condensed-matter physics at the associate- or full-professor level. The successful candidate is expected to establish an internationally recognized experimental condensed-matter research program in an area with relevance to the micro- and nano-electronics industry. The appointment would begin in Fall 2020.
The candidate would be expected to complement and enhance the existing strengths in the department, which currently has 27 full-time faculty members, approximately 55 PhD graduate students, and about 70 undergraduate majors who actively participate in its various research programs. The department currently has 5 faculty members active in experimental and theoretical condensed-matter physics.
The Department is also actively involved in Nuclear and Hadronic Physics at nearby Jefferson Lab (DOE), High-Energy Physics at Fermilab and CERN, plasma physics, and in-house AMO Physics, with strong theoretical support in Nuclear, High-Energy and Plasma Physics. William & Mary has a long tradition of excellent teaching, and the candidate would be expected to play an important role in mentoring both doctoral and undergraduate students in the Physics Department, and in contributing to the Department’s new Engineering Physics and Applied Design degree track.
