The Public Safety Operations Specialist assists the Manager of Public Safety in maintaining effective and efficient communication between the College’s Department of Public Safety, outside emergency and law enforcement agencies, and the College community. Serving as the Operations Center’s primary point of contact, this position demonstrates sound judgement in establishing priorities for emergency and non-emergency calls, and dispatching Public Safety personnel in accordance with established procedures. The Operations Specialist monitors all telecommunications equipment, CCTV and alarm systems, and notifies personnel of activities requiring security presence or initiates proper response to ensure the safety and security of people and College property.

Specific Responsibilities

• Receive screens and respond to incoming emergency and non-emergency calls for police assistance. Dispatches appropriate units and maintains necessary communication with units during their response to calls. Performs a variety of clerical, record-keeping, and general support duties related to communication activities.

• Serve as the Officer in charge in the absence of the Lead Officer.

• Monitor all telecommunications equipment and alarm systems to detect emergencies, malfunctions and activities and relay the required information to the appropriate Security personnel, and emergency and law enforcement personnel.

• Manages, maintains and understands with expertise the college CCTV system, recording retrieving and analyzing vision data.

• Entering the data into the computer system.

• Assist the Manager of Public Safety by detecting and alerting management of any adverse conditions that may affect the normal operations of the College.

• Monitor and respond to a number of alarms and technical systems.

• Assist with broadcasting messages through the College’s safety communications and emergency management systems.

• Maintain accurate logs and records of information related to emergency calls, rosters, etc.

• Operate the computer aided dispatch and case management system.

• Monitor electronic door access system for main campus and regional sites, video surveillance system and ID card system hardware and software applications while managing an initial response as a first measure to problems with the systems.

• Maintain the security of sensitive and confidential electronic security records.

• Operate, maintain and assign dispatch equipment.

• Test and adjust communication and alarm systems, and report malfunctions to facilities area.

• Assist in all technical areas and projects related to the 24/7 operations of the communications center.

• Travel to the College’s regional centers and provide oversight for Public Safety operations and supervision to public safety officers, as needed.

• Communicate extensively with all stakeholders within operations protocol.

• Interface as needed with ITS regarding network, access and related desktop support issues.

• Deliver quality customer services to both internal and external constituents in a professional, helpful and courteous manner.

• Responds diplomatically and tactfully to people of diverse backgrounds, in adverse situations, when they may be confused, irate, upset, under the influence, or irrational.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma, or GED equivalent, is required.

• Minimum of two (2) years experience in security related work required.

• Knowledge of relevant equipment, procedures, and strategies to promote effective security operations for the protection of people, data and property required.

• Skilled in active listening and effective written and verbal communication skills required.

• Must possess and maintain a current valid driver’s license.

• Good judgment and solid decision-making skills required.

• Ability to maintain composure under stressful situations required.

• Strong attention to detail in completing tasks and following complex instructions required.

• Ability to work alternate shift assignments, as needed, is required.

• Certification in CPR and first aid required, or must be obtained during the first six (6) months of employment.

• Ability to work mandatory overtime during critical incidents, as needed.

• Ability to work day, “swing” and Midnight shifts, as needed.

• Ability to work weekends and holidays, as needed.

• Willingness to travel locally to the College’s regional centers as needed.

• Ability to maintain sensitivity, understanding and respect for a diverse academic environment inclusive of students, faculty and staff of varying social economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in criminal justice or a related field preferred.

• Previous experience in the public safety field using radio systems and monitoring a large CCTV network preferred.
